Coinfected With HIV and Hep C? Time To Party Like Its 1996

"As hepatitis C treatment undergoes a revolution akin to the introduction of HIV antiretrovirals, the doors are swinging wide open for people coinfected with HIV to be cured of hep C."

http://www.hepmag.com/articles/coinfected_treatment_2502_25319.shtml

Looks like the news for the coinfected is looking brighter and brighter all the time! The current anti viral research is providing great benefits and hope for people everywhere! A big woot over that one!!!

Thanks Wayne!  We don`t know yet how useful it will prove to be but we are all in agreement that if there`s a need then we want to be here to meet it.  This forum has a wonderfully supportive and helpful membership and of course we wish to offer that support to everyone and all categories of people affected by Hep C.

Thanks Wayne, and thanks Malcolm for the information and link from the APASL Meeting.  You have all the best contacts!

Good point about the lack of new meds still in regions of the world where they`re so badly needed, it`s easy to overlook that fact when so much of the information we read is US based.

I`ll continue to post co-infection updates.

Cheers, Jill

Hi Jill,

This was discussed in great detail at the APASL Meeting last week. I attended the sessions I was interested in, and the Chairman is my doc!

There was a lot of HBV, HCC and HIV coinfected stuff. There was interest in a new Chinese anti-fibrotic, but basically there was no new data. It seems the Asia-Pacific Region has ~77% of the world's HCV patients, and many countries will be stuck with Peg and Riba for several years. If anyone reads the Programme and wants more info, please let me know. Cheers.

Good info. Thanks, Jill. The co-infected could really use a break.

People living with both HIV and hepatitis C will be amongst those to benefit the most as the new and improved hepatitis C drugs become widely available.

According to Professor Gregory Dore from the Kirby Institute, hepatitis C progresses about twice as fast in people who are also infected with HIV making effective treatment particularly important for this population.

He said once people were stabilised on the antiretroviral medications for their HIV, it would be relatively easy to start the 12-week curative treatment for hepatitis C.

Professor Dore said he was optimistic that a range of partnerships between pharmaceutical companies and local manufacturers in poorer countries with a high disease burden could produce low-cost generic versions of the new hepatitis C drugs as happened with HIV drugs.
