Biotene helped me greatly while I was on treatment! They make an excellent toothpaste that really made a great difference. I also used that old toothpaste called Pepsodent. It prevented the burning that most everything else caused and it only cost .99 cents a tube!

Beautiful smile. I suspect you'll be doing that frequently!

I developed Sjogren's as a result of my Hep C infection, and have relied heavily on a product called Biotene.

I can get it where I am in the Caribbean, and I see they sell it in the AU.

I'm not sure if it addresses the ph problem, but it certainly helps dry mouth and might helpful for folks while on Interferon.

I was reading the list of potential side effects from Interferon/Rib and it's a wonder anyone takes this stuff! My own consultant Hepatologist has told me to just hold off on that treatment! I do accept that I'm probably putting off the inevitable, but I can live with that. I am glad you are smiling again...what do they say, "Smile and the world smiles with you"!

Congrats Malcolm! I know you're glad to have that ordeal behind you.

I'd be curious to know what the additional cost to care would be if they could factor in dental damages. While the USA fights over medical care, I truly wish there would be some consideration made to dental care. The availability of good, reasonably priced dental insurance (care), especially for us private payers is sadly lacking.

Interferon also has a direct effect on the salivary glands, causing decreased, acidic saliva. The bone marrow depression with decreased neutrophils also plays a part. 3 monthly checkups while on Interferon are now mandatory, but hopefully that will disappear as Interferon fades into the distance.

Over here, tooth loss from Interferon is accepted by the DVA and Insurance, provided you get your Dentist and doctor to say the right things! Cheers.

I didn't know interferon destroys your teeth. I was at the dentist yesterday and apparently i have a cavity inside a tooth (not visible from the exterior and not causing me any pain) but it is close to a nerve and I may need to have root canal as a result. I had root canal on another tooth and had it capped which is now (a year and some later) starting to darken. I also had another tooth fall apart which the dentist was able to rebuild. I take very good care of my teeth and have flossed daily for over 20 years and have regular checkups...but now I'm wondering if the 70 weeks of interferon 3 times a week I did over 15 years ago is responsible for these problems.

 :) good for you Malcolm i wanted Implants :( but heard insurance wouldnt cover it but i may in the future i hear they are way more comfortable...

 

 my upper gums are still healing since tuesday .... Glad everything went well with your abutements too....

  HCV Genotype 3a , now Psot-Tx was on S/riba. First VL was 5.8 mil on 7-5-13 then "und" at 3.8 weeks. 06/13/14 still und. off meds 3 days back on 7/29 Last pill 08/10/14 SVR+4

I can't imagine how rough 4 courses of Interferon must have been.  I am so glad you can eat, smile, and are happy with your teeth  smile

Hi Malcolm:

Ceramic crowns are very cool.  My DDS has a machine where she can make them in the office in about 15 minutes (it used to take about an hour but this newer machine is super fast).  I just had 2 lower porcelain crowns replaced with the ceramics.  The problem with porcelain is that they are bonded to metal and over time the metal can begin to show at the base.  

Not sure about Lab vs CEREC made ceramic crowns though.  The lab made ceramics might still be a bit better looking although less convenient. 

Glad you are done with that. Those trips to the dentist are not fun at all.
