When I went for a biopsy they used a image machine first then a checker board thing on me. Next they wiped the area with a local and hooked a needle to my IV. When I asked what it was they said morphine. I told them I didn't want it. They said I had to have it so when I tasted it I told them ok stop. They told every one in the room they were doing this with out anesthesia. I asked how they know when they get the needle into my liver. They said you will let us know hehehehe. Doctor showed it to me it looked like the worm in the bottom of the bottle. Best part was when in the recovery room they put me next to a older guy who they must have expanded his stomach. He was out cold but let loose the longest f@rt I ever heard.

My first liver biopsy was done with local anesthesia without imaging guidance. I'm not sure how "liberal"  they were in dosage, but don't recall any peri or post procedure discomfort. I had the option of some type of mild sedative, possibly Fentynal, but I declined. The most annoying part was the ulceration that I developed from the surgical tape on the bandage. I had a light scar for years.

The second biopsy was done with full sedation and a CT scan for guidance. Again, no problems or pain after the procedure. Just follow all the prep instructions and make sure you fast as Malcolm stated. After the biopsy, if you are like me, you'll probably be hungry more than anything else. Good luck Robin!

had mine done in january.I was so afraid of the liver biopsy becauce the Dr"s  in my town all did it on there exam table in there office, everyone said it hurt like he@@. I"m talking 20 years ago.   Fast forward  January 2014, I climb up on the OR table, ultrasound,  IV started and they knocked me out, took 5 biopsy"s, all just 4.5 inches above my belly button .  I woke up in recovery room, felt fine.  Had to stay for 4 hours, was told to watch for shoulder pain.  I had no complications.     As it turned out it was no big deal, BUT I was put under for the procedure.

Man, I wish the guy who did mine would have stressed LIBERAL.  I think his name was Marquis De Sade.  

But, we all survived and are here to reminisce, Trainhopper.  It only hurts when I think about it but thanks for asking.  lol

Hi Robin,

Sedation for a percutaneous liver biopsy is up to the guy doing the procedure.

I've done thousands, and for 90% of the time, liberal use of local anaesthesia was all that was required. I stress LIBERAL.  The exam is easier and safer to do when the patient can 'breathe in, breathe out, hold it out..' etc. The biopsy gun is fired in expiration. I always had a talk with patients, explained the procedure, got the Consent Form signed and checked things like platelets and INR. It became easy to spot who would require a dose of Midazolam/Fentanyl and I always had an Anaesthetist available to give this if required. Patients need to fast for 6 hours prior to the procedure, so the gallbladder is distended, the stomach is empty and the liver blood flow is decreased..

Whether to go between the lower ribs or under the ribs depends on the patient shape. An ultrasound shows these easily. I usually did between 2 or 3 biopsies of the R liver lobe (segment 8) with a 15-17 gauge biopsy gun, and you need  good biopsy specimens at least 3 cm. long (>12 portal tracts). I would only do the L. lobe if specifically requested.

Post-biopsy, you lie with pillow under your right side for 2 hours, then can go home after 4 hours, provided the obs are OK. In most cases, the patient had to be collected by a responsible adult. No heavy lifting for a week.

Over 30 years, probably a dozen patients had problems with temporary pain needing treatment, and two required admission for bleeding (confirmed by CT), but none required surgery.

My first biopsy, in 1983, was done in London by a Registrar without any imaging guidance. Afterwards I had dreadful R shoulder-tip pain for 48 hours. That's why I'm careful and use a lot of L.A.

lol.... And I was sooooo hoping for HIGH hopes lol. Well, when I asked the lady about why the long wait period she said the dr. wanted to go threw the second and third rib... If that has any meaning to the longer then normal wait time...  I don't guys.... I am telling it like it was told to me... It even sounds weird to me.... Keeping me over night for a needle poke? COME ON... But I guess it is what it is.... Also we must remember where I am and the troubles I keep seeming to have with a proper Tx.

Robin that doesn't  sound right, that would be very expensive and unnecessary,  if they do paracentesis with a local, no reason they won't do the biopsy the same way, my wife works in IR at the hospital, and yeah they may give some vercet and phytenal ...mayyyybe, but unless they are doing it transjugular i think someone is giving you bogus info. You will probably be in for a coup of hrs after to monitor for bleeding etc....don't get your hopes to HIGH if t a catch my drift.

guarentee it... here is verbatim how mine went....

 

think i weigh in at 59.5 kilos which is like 130 to 135 lbs.. so thats accuarte checked in at 7am and was total done by like 1015 am like a little over 3 hours...

had me get naked and put on one of those gowns... hit a vein with lidacaine then inserted iv drip 1 liter water ... made me pee alot later......

um the OP consisted of me going in ultrasounding the area said i had a long ribcage were thinkin maybe they had to go through it but didnt went under had me hold a breath and check spot a few times ... actual event doc came in hit the spot with lidacaine that hurt for a second then the gave me 50 mg of fentanyl that was the low end for sedative it tasted peperminty as it enterd the iv.. felt it a little bit to know it was there .. then he alright hold your breath and he hit with that needle and you hear a loud pop and thats the sample being taken out... looks like a tiny pink worm,,, i was like thats all you need ?  then they have you rest on yourside for an hour and theres a oxdiser on your finger pre op and post op that measures your oxygination in your blood and your blood pressure and pulse... my puls tripd the alarm a few times as it was like 44- or 45 beat a minute at sum points but they thought that was normal for me thier like do you walk or jog... they also in OP commented this was real easy because im skinny... SO yes i remember all of it no the sedative didnt wipe me out felt fine after OP eager to see results on the 11th hopefully they are good or show not very much imflamation or fibrosis im hoping...... it all went really smooth the blood pressure cuff did read outs every ten minuets .... the waiting and post op werent too bad slaying there waiting to go.... i did skip work yesterday but will go back today ... even though i felt ok .. i was told nope your skipping it ....bleeding internaly or seeping through this gause patch right below my right ribcage would suck ...... hopefully iLL be ok out at the farm friday night through monday afternoon ..bymyself isolated out of town .... i have a phone .. i feel good now not much pain when i bend or move around...they said look for bleeding ,bruising ,and pain,, if u see any call doc...... IF any of you new people have a biopsy Its realy easy or at least mine was ...alota the credit goes to the staff and to you guys for helping me to know what its like...... THANKS again :) fir now im just resting and eating... was tired earlier cause i got not a good nap before the op..... but ya i was impressed with how seamless everything went..... anyway proably check in again here soon :) everyone have a good thursday 

i guess i dont have to watch over animals on the weekend i was told so that means more rest.... my job is light cleaning so i should be fine thursday and friday :)

you do more waiting then the actual biopsy actual biopsy take 10 minuets... im telling youll be impressed and surprised by how easy it goes ... they barely gave me anything and i remember the whole event...as I say up there :)  I am F2

lol, I told my Ma that the only thing to look forward to was getting a high again I was joking. But yeah at first the first lady I talked to said yeah just a local. Then the Hospital called and asked if I had someone to sign me in and out of hospital. I said well, what will it take like 2 hours, at most? Nurse laughs no she says.... ill be in hospital under heavy sedation for up to 12 hours...... I didn't have any family to spend a 16 hour day with me (2 hour drive to hospital that gives biopsy) so they are admitting me over night... Shi*s got me worried... (just a little bit but still)

You get heavy sedation! Lucky you. I didn't even get a valium. I just got a local. I was just supposed to take it easy for a few days and not lift nothing heavy.

So on Wednesday of next week I go in for biopsy.... I know its a standard procedure and all but if its just a needle ð then why the heavy sedation for up to 12 hours? Just has me worried is all... Can someone walk me through what happens.... Am I going to be awake? Called my gastroenterologists office and haven't gotten a call back. Called my other doc. And it yielded the same results.... I looked it up online..... Seems like there's a few ways to do it. But yeah pain afterword's? Yadda yadda.... Just some info would be cool
