Abbvie's piece of the pie will be nothing at the price of over $83,000. Why would any doctor or provider prescribe multiple pills (Abbvie) a day over the one pill a day, and more effective Harvoni? Especially when eight weeks of Harvoni is just over $63,000 for the treatment naive. 

Gilead takes the entire market once again. Not a smart decision on behalf of Abbvie IMO. Very disappointing there still isn't any competition for Gilead.

Matt didn't I read they were going to use Riba with Harvoni for certain people? Not everyone gets Riba with Abbvies either. I have a friend on it without and she is having no side effects.

Thanks for posting this, Malcolm, we were expecting Abbvie to get FDA approval for this combo any time now.

It will be very interesting to see how many doctors prescribe it over Harvoni, especially at that price.  The success rates are impressive with minimal side effects but as Matt said, the need to take Ribavirin doesn`t go in its favour. 

Another option for Genotype 1`s though and good luck to Abbvie, at least Gilead has some competition.

Dec 19 (Reuters) - U.S. health regulators on Friday approved AbbVie's all-oral treatment for hepatitis C, and the company said the drug would cost $83,319 for a typical 12-week plan.

GT 1a, was tx naļve, cirrhotic(Fibrosure), 64 y.o. Started Harvoni 12/12/14 for 12 wks. EOT weeks 4, 13, and 24 HCV not detected! HVC not detected EOT plus one year.

A smooth sea doesn't make for a skillful sailor.

I agree, we all thought that Abbvie would price a little less than Gileads Harvoni. I did the Abbvie meds for 12 weeks and now started the Gilead's and can say that they are not that much different but the pill burden and the Ribavirin will make the choice for most Doctors IMO for Harvoni. Let the battle begin, I'm sure they have other behind the wall deals with some big pharmacy and insurance concerns. For right now IMO Sofosbuvir does not have an equal and that will sway many patients

From what Beacon posted it isn't going to be that much less expensive which disappoints me. I just finished this regiem as a trial and am super happy it has been approved. But my husband still needs treatment and hopefully the insurance will cover it. So far it has worked well for me. On the 29th I go in for EOT + 4 week labs. Hopefully I will still be undetected.

I hope so much that their price is seriously lower than Harvoni so more Medicaid people can gain treatment. Here in Oregon the doctors keep telling people to wait for Abbvie because it will be less expensive. We shall see.

Hi all,

As expected, the AbbVie combo obtained FDA approval. The price has not been announced as yet. Good luck to them-they'll need it to get a slice of the HCV treatment pie. Cheers.
