My son makes yummy kale chips in the oven - not for me though as on 'no salt' diet.

Re fat - I find the subject amusing as I have eaten mutton and lamb most my life and loved the fat, esp as a child when I was skinny as "two yards of pump water" according to my Dad. I also eat butter - always have.

I put on the most weight when a vegetarian eating lots of pasta etc. When I started eating meat again and stopped eating pasta my weight dropped and health improved.

In NZ 'vegetable oil' on the label means palm oil - not a particularly healthy product. Canola Oil - which is promoted as a healthy alternative - comes from rape seed - obvious why it is re-marketed as Canola! A conspiracy theory is that rape seed oil was developed as an industrial penetrating oil; eventually someone figured they could make more money selling it as a healthy cooking oil.

I use rice bran oil for cooking, olive oil for salads etc and flax seed oil for health. Butter goes on everything possible. And I rub coconut oil on my skin.

Strange that I never saw this post.  No I have never had one of those and actually I am not keen on dried fruit.

I have not had the Kale chips again because although they tasted very good, they left an aftertaste for a long time.

It may not with everyone, but it did with me. I may try it again however but time will tell.

I have been eating lots of other foods in the same category, Spinach, Broccoli, Cabbage etc. They should fill that part of the diet.

Good stuff SF!

I have yet to try these (takes me a while to come around to doing these things), but I WILL be trying them.

Curious, have you ever had a food dehydrator ... I'm thinking about getting one in the not too distant future?

Dave

Hi Dustbear,

I would not worry about the kind of Kale. I used exactly what they said not to because that is what I have. The curly kind. It was just fine. Three minutes in the microwave and nothing is brown or burned and you are good to go. smile

smile  Thank you so much for the Kale video!  We tried it in the oven and it wasn't all that great and we don't like it boiled or raw.

Can't wait to try but I hope I can find the right type of kale.

Greetings,

Reading up on the use of Coconut Oil is pretty interesting stuff. The relation between WW2 and to creation of Vegetable Oil in particular. Once the Islands were under attack, the Coconut export industry took a dive. So someone had to come up with an oil substitute and in comes Vegetable Oil. That became very profitable so the next course of action was to dissuade the use of Coconut Oil and really blast the "Fat" content.

Folks became very grateful for Vegetable Oil and ceased using the evil FAT FILLED Coconut Oil.

Aww the art of advertising and the lemmings they count on.

Took awhile to identify the difference between good fat and bad fat but in the meantime BILLION$ were made.

Coconut Oil may also be helpful for y'all who maybe having some problems with the skin due to the current treatments.

Also and this is important now. If you are ever shipwrecked and do NOT have a Volleyball, they make great friends.

noJimmy you are an idiot!

Thank you for that information and link Tig.

Just getting past point 1 would be enough for me to say PASS! I can see why they no longer use it. It seems we are so fortunate for these new treatments now. Lets see how I feel about that once I start mine.

Just a side note since you're talking about fat. Just two years ago, the old Incivek Interferon triple protocol, required taking the medication twice a day with 20 grams of FAT! Some really unpleasant stories here on the forum, you should search for a few. Here's a link to that drug, not used anymore, because they found it unsafe. Pay attention to the rectal problems and rash, it may make Sovaldi glow like gold in comparison. People had to quit because of those side effects and the rates of success weren't terribly impressive. I know you are all experiencing difficulties, but each of you is pioneering the latest and greatest treatment. You need to know that you're making it easier for the next group. It takes will some days to get out of bed, but do your best. If you can afford to stay in bed til noon that day, why not do it? As Rich (TX) always says, "This too shall Pass"...

Hi Dave,

I concur as it is absolutely not something I would normally try but neither is all the other things I am now and about to. I think you may be pleasantly surprised. I was.

I have almonds and yes, they are ridiculously expensive and best not to eat many.. approx 20 since even though they have a great health benefit, they are still fat in the long run.

A trick I learned regarding almonds. Take a small bowl of warm to hot water and soak them. Five minutes is about enough and they swell and get softer. This way you feel you have eaten a lot more than you really did with the added advantage of not breaking a tooth no

Not something I would normally try ...

... but now I'm curious,

I'm planning on buying a food dehydrator soon but this sounds much quicker and very easy to make.

I'm all for finding healthy snacks, I spend a good part of my life wanting some kind of snack.

I've tried to find healthy snacks, unsalted almonds are one of my favorites but very expensive and too many is not a good thing.

These Kale chips sound like something good to have in the snack arsenal.

Thanks for posting this SF!

Dave

I purchased Kale yesterday for the first time after learning how good it was for us and the liver as well. I had it in a salad with other assorted vegetables but I had seen a few recipes about Kale chips and thought I need to try this. Earlier today I did but was skeptical ... was being the operative word. They are really good. Here is a YT video about it made in 3 minutes in a microwave. Of course you could substitute a no salt product when that is an issue. Crispier than I would have ever imagined. I used the curly Kale and Olive Oil as in the original recipe I had seen. There was no problem at all.
