i've had dental problems 4 the last 4 years due to the dry mouth disease. now i have it down pat. i highly recommend; rx chlorhexidine gluconate
oral rinse 0.12%, rx sodium fluoride 1.1% paste, salt&baking soda rinses, act 111 dry mouth rinse, sensodine pro-enamel toothpaste, the
philips sonicare water dental flosser and a ph saliva kit tester. i know it's a lot but it works for me. i'm on my 5th dental implant!
thanks everyone for the dental guard tip. it made me realize yes i'm grinding my teeth. also on monday i'm going to see if i can put the fluoride paste in it at nite.

I have a bad habit of clinching and grinding my teeth. Noticed it got worse with treatment. I wear a night guard to help with it in my sleep and use a dry mouth mouthwash before bed to help with the overnight dryness.

The Magic Mouthwash I was given was Benadryl, lidocaine and Nystatin. It was an oral lifesaver! I had sores and thrush. That was awful and started the first week of Interferon and RIBA. I guess it lasted another two weeks and so far no more of that. But my teeth are becoming very tender to bite down on. It's always something with this treatment. I hope we'll get to play after all this pay(ing)! A return to good health will be payment enough

I kept all of mine. Sores in my mouth were a problem and they should not be ignored. Your doctor can give you an RX for Miracle Mouthwash. I used it several times daily. It is a mix of liquid Benedryl, Maalox, and a prescription. It keep my mouth clean. I also used an all natural toothpaste and a child's toothbrush.
Good luck!
Karen:)

Thanks Mallani, Great reminder for me.
I never did reschedule my cleaning appt. with my dentist. It was last month during the Incivik event. I'll reschedule my cleaning today. My doc ok'd it as long as they didn't do any deep cleaning. I have a mouth full of crowns and don't want to have issues. Scary!
Have a good day! Kel

Hi guys,
I have done 2 previous posts about dental care during Rx. Back in the late 1990's I had a total of 2 years of the old Interferon and lost 2 teeth. Before my last Rx I had a thorough dental checkup, and despite felling like crap, I had a dental check every 3 months and thoroughly cleaned my teeth at least twice a day. All looked fine, but a week after my 48 weeks of Triple, another molar tooth broke off at the gumline.
There is no doubt that Interferon has a direct effect on tooth enamel, and with the reduced acidic saliva and low WBC, teeth can rot in a very short time. I'm now getting 3 implants!

Ha,ha! I'm one year behind you Bob and have been a COB (Cranky Old Bastur*) for years, so I can relate! I'm actually surprised I still have teeth. Right now that would be a welcome option!

I started reading the posts here regarding teeth pain. I wondered if there wasn't something to it and it looks like its true. I didn't have any issues when I started treatment but have been noticing that the teeth on the left side of my mouth are tender to bite down on. No problems otherwise, just when biting down. I had a dental appt. but my doctor made me cancel it. Claiming it can cause a potential infection. Anyone else having or had these problems? I read that Interferon can cause bone loss and make you susceptible to cavities. That could explain my discomfort...

One home treatment that I have heard of is using a tea bag. Steap the tea bag. Then let it cool till it is very warm but not buring hot. Then put it between your tooth and the interior of your cheek.
It will draw out any puss and has good anti oxidants and healing properties.
It's good for infected pimples and fever blisters also :)

Gidday Symon,
Yeh... I'd definitely see a dentist even just to find out your options. Despite having extensive dental b4 tx ! I'm having to have root canal done now, because despite really low wbc's, platelets etc;, adventatious root infection would be SERIOUS a little further down the track.
Hope it works out,
Cheers,
Brendan

Hi Symon,
Unfortunately it does happen - lot a couple of teeth myself 'cos of tx Dentist did an X-Ray and said there was substantial bone loss, which was the cause. Never got told about this particular side effect!
Interferon can give you a dry mouth and that can cause tooth problems - chewing sugar-free gum can help and there's spray you can get, though I don't know what it's called....... see if I can find out

Hi Symon- Treatment has been known to affect the teeth- people have had their teeth break off during the treatment phase and it is suggested that if you need any dental work done, accomplish it BEFORE starting treatment. Which of course is a bit late for you now.
I would suggest seeing a dentist, just to make sure that you don't have anything going on with your teeth that could increase the risk of broken ones or severe cavities.

Has anyone on treatment had problems with their teeth since starting the program? had toothache when I first started and thought nothing more of it, purchased some clove oil and dabbed onto the sore area. it kind of went away, I have now noticed that the right side of of my lower teeth have lifted and painfull and cannot eat at all on the right side. it is started affecting my left side upper and lower, I dont particularly want to go to the dentist as am hoping it is going to settle down when I come off treatment in 15 weeks, I dont want them pulled. I had previously a good set of teeth. any ideas please??
