The normal range for AST and ALT is 5-45 (depending on lab.) . These enzymes are released from hepatocytes as a result of liver cell damage or death. Chronic HCV often causes mild elevation of enzymes. However this is very variable, and even cirrhotics can have normal enzymes, so this is not a test of liver function. More reliable tests are albumin, prothrombin time, bilirubin and alkaline phosphatase. Mild fatty liver and many drugs can cause elevated enzymes. So, liver function may be entirely normal even with elevated enzymes.
