I called in work sick for the first time yesterday. I felt so good after getting proper rest and eating a softer bland diet( rice, eggs, cheese, etc. )My rectal relief looks like the list posted below. No two days are the same.
I'm thinking long term now and expect the best. Keep up the good fight.

Hi, megan
The anorectal irritation was by far the worst part of treatment for me. I used a rotating list of remedies, making my selections based on a gut instinct that made no sense. The list contained prep H suppositories, cortisone cream, witch hazel wipes, warm baths, sleeping with no pants, prep H cream, and staying hydrated at all times. On two occasions the pain was bad enough to bring tears. But mostly it was manageable as long as I took care of it in a continuous manner. I carried the Pegasys starter kit bag with me everywhere. I mean everywhere. Inside was several kinds of butt burn remedies, two 20g fat snacks, enough Incivek and ribavirin to last a full day, and a bottle of Deer Park. Never left home without it. Yes, I went to work every day, church every Sunday, out to dinner with my wife occasionally, but I never went anywhere without my survival kit. Around week 10, when the hematocrit dropped to critical, no energy, itching like fire, hair falling out, I still had my Pegasys bag. After twelve weeks the improvement was miraculous. It was insane how quickly the bad effects of Incivek wear off.
Stay the course and keep your chin up. Big improvements are in your future. And as nasty as Incivek is, it sure works well.

As far as I know there is really nothing to stop the rectal issues, because it's caused by the incivek. The best you can do is just treat the symptoms for some temporary relief. My doctor prescribed me hydrocortizone cream 2.5% and that helped. For nausea, pay close attention to any foods that give you issues and try to stick with foods that you do better with. I would also mention this to your doc and maybe they will write something for the nausea.
The 12 weeks on incivek was the most difficult time for me. Once you get past that, things get much better imo. For those of you just starting, try and stay positive, and know it will get better.

Thought of another thing: wear very loose clothing, sleep without underwater, lay on side w leg propped up...fan w magazine if needed. Let it air out. Also, I tried cornstarch and patted it on flared up skin. Some people used witch hazel didn't help me. Don't use a bunch of ideas at once! It can make it worse. Try one or two a day. I know how painful it is, Hope u get relief ASAP. Mine came and went but seem to last days at a time. The medicine burns coming out! Drink lots of water too JoAnne

Gatekeep and Miggs, I was thought to stay on top of symptoms as they get out of hand sometimes quickly! I suggest calling your doctor and telling them you are hurting! My rectal issues were awful too! I feel for you guys! Call and get some relief If prep h suppository not helping, my doctor prescribed a stringer one. Use the creams on skin it helps JoAnne

thank you everyone! i am on the triple therapy of pegasys, incevik & ribaviron (sp?). i did not have physical exam done before starting the meds. i have been drinking LOTS of water and my diet hasnt changed much, more peanut butter & apples than usual bc its an easy snack to get the 20gm of fat. This is only my 4th day on the meds, and the 'fire in the hole' butt pain didnt start until yesterday, so hopefully it gets better within the week. if not i'll be going to the dr earlier than my two week blood results.

Hi Megan, welcome! Sorry to hear you`re having so much pain and discomfort, must be making you quite miserable. I hope you get some relief soon. I agree with Vern (12 Step Guy) that you should get a medical examination to check what`s going on.

Are you on triple therapy? Are you drinking enough water? How about diet? What are you not eating that you used to? Have you seen your GP about the butt pain? They should have done a rectal exam to look for tears or fissures.
About the only positive advice I have is that you are more then the negative physical symptoms that youre experiencing. It gets better.

Hey! So glad u found the forum! I haven't had much trouble w nausea, When I did I ate lots of saltine crackers to settle my stomach. The fire-in-the-hole was brutal! Try prep-H suppository, buy baby wipes, use butt paste (baby product for diaper rash) Or aquaphor healing ointment around rectum before using bathroom! Keep these medicines by tiolet. Soak in lukewarm tub w little Epsom salt. Also, look for SEARCH bottom at top of page. Do a search for fire in the hole and/or rectum pain. You will find more answers. Hang in there, and her suppository from your doctor if Prep H doesn't help after a week. Another cream I used was Calmoseptine Ointment. Also u may need to buy Bioene toothpaste cause your mouth May start getting sensitive! We are here for you! This formun walked me thru those early months! Congratulations on getting started! I am in week 22 of 48! JoAnne
