Hi Isiscat
The doctor gave the same reason that due to very less exposure to sun, a vast majority of the people living in UAE suffer from vit D deficiency. He advised me to go out in the sun during the sunrise and at sunset for app 15-20 minutes and my deficiency will be removed within 2-3 weeks.
Regards Omar
Good news regarding the lesion, Omar.
I take a Vit D-3 supplement but was just wondering if an indoor UV lamp could substitute for outdoor sunlight. Turns out it can, so an indoor lamp may be another option if you are short on natural sunlight. Not sure how the use of sun lamps impact your skin.
I was also concerned when it first showed up in the ultra sound.
The lesion was a benign as per doctor conclusion on the CT scan report. Report stated that it shows intense periphera enhancement on arterial phase study and on delayed images it is hyper dense to surrounding liver parenchyma.
The doctor is sure that it is benign but i will follow up with ultra sound every 6 months to keep an eye on it.

Liver lesion of 3x4 cm would be a concern. Forget the AFP. What did the CT report? Just being cautious.Cheers from NZ.

Hi Tig
Thanks for the valuable info....
The lesion was detected 5 months back when the first ultrasound was done. Later on AFP test and CT scan confirmed it is benign.
I discussed the results with my doctor and he said that these numbers can fluctuate on the same day if the tests are taken again, so until and unless you treat Hep C, there is no way your liver functions can improve.
Further i thought that Vit D deficiency is a direct result of Hep C, but he denied it and mentioned that there is no correlation between Hep C and Vit D deficiency.
I was happy when got the results but became disappointed after discussion with the doctor.
Glad to see you are hanging in there in Dubai and preparing for Sovaldi tx. Your doc is right about the liver functions. They may fluctuate and can be (presumably superfically) bolstered by various supplements but as long as you have the virus doing its dirty deeds your liver will not be able to heal and improve.
There have been studies that link Vit D deficiencies to HCV but the conclusions are not accepted by all. Vit D deficiencies are also prevalent in Eskimos and others who live in areas where there is not enough sunshine. You should talk to your doc about taking a Vit D supplement at least until your levels improve. Vit D is not known to interfere with tx efficacy (unlike some other supplements) and is generally considered quite safe in reasonable doses. Good luck and please keep us posted.

Hi Omar,
Welcome back! It's good to hear that you're getting prepared to start, you must be excited! HCV patients often have low Vit D levels. Information shows that HCV likely prevents the absorption of Vit D and that's most often the reason we have lower levels of it. Taking a VIt D supplement and foods rich in it are a good idea. I will include a link for some info on it, a little dated and refers to it's benefits to people on IFN based therapies, but in general, it's very valuable. The injection you received should provide many benefits.
You are correct, your lab values will fluctuate, especially the VL. So I wouldn't place much concern in the amount of movement yours have taken. Nothing to be unhappy about, they improved! A lot of things can cause these differences, diet, health, etc can all do this. The lesion on ultrasound needs to be discussed, but your doctor saw the report. Did he say anything at the time? These types of liver lesions often are hemangiomas that are just clusters of blood vessels and are benign. I wouldn't worry about it as long as your doctor is aware of it. He will likely recommend future ultrasounds to monitor it, that's the common follow up.
Everything sounds promising! Keep in touch and let us know how you progress. Good luck!!

Hi All
I haven't posted for a long time since I was busy getting registered for Sovaldi. Thanks fully I am done with the registration and awaiting the medicine to be received.
I was asked to re-do certain tests and it showed improvements as follows:
PCR test - Viral load decreased to 250k from 1.6 million (last test was done 5 months back)
AST went down to 32 from 52
ALT went down to 61 from 95
All other results were in normal range except for ALT (reference point was to be less than 40).
However i had deficiency of vitamin D and was given an injection of Vit D3.
My ultra-sound showed some mild increased echogenicity and a single focal lesion of 3cmX4cm. Mild fatty liver infiltration was also concluded in the Ultrasound report.
I discussed the results with my doctor and he said that these numbers can fluctuate on the same day if the tests are taken again, so until and unless you treat Hep C, there is no way your liver functions can improve.

Any thoughts from the members?
