That's an interesting and informative article, I'll have to read more on that but I see that I'll have to treat oranges the same way I do lemons and just juice them myself or peel, take out seeds and throw in the blender.

Thanks for that ... I was not aware of the actually more processed, not from concentrate orange juice ... I should have been but live and learn ... if ya don't die first, lol.

Haven't been following this thread much.  But after going thru some of the recipes, my mouth is watering.  I need to figure out some good citrus smoothies.  I have multiple varieties of oranges, mandarin's, and a meyer lemon in the yard.  Also kumquats, pink, and red grapefruit.  Love my citrus trees.  Really need to make some kumquat marmalade before they go bad.  Too for north for guava's but love good guava jelly, which is hard to find.  Most in the stores have so much sugar you can't even taste the guava.  Hope all are having a great evening.  Great to see so many reaching SVR, so many getting closer, and those getting ready to start tx.

I use fresh lemon but Diet Cranberry juice that has 5 calories per serving. Orange juice I use is 100% Orange Juice Pasteurized, not from concentrate. I try to read the labels and get what's going to help rather than hurt. It's not easy these days.

I do have a Jack La lain juicer that I use but have found that I get more out of fruit when I just remove peel, seeds and throw it in the blender. Ya, I go for pasteurized where possible if it's a juice, the less processed, the better.

Usually if man processed it he screwed it up ... LOL

I also peal most apples and tree ripened fruit since they almost always spray with peoplecydes, usually safe with stuff that grows underground like potatoes, carrots etc and I always wash leafy greens to get whatever they may have sprayed on it removed.

It's hard to shop for decent food, there's so much really bad for you stuff on shelves.

I try to hit Saturday Markets etc to get fresh local produce when in season and I want to start buying extra, freezing some, drying some and making juices and soup stocks that I can freeze for off months.

Hope you are making your own juices, ie Orange Juice and Cranberry juice.  I saw a show about the 100% fresh squeezed not from Concentrate.  One the show they said, one glass of that  you might as well be drinking a soda.

Here is a link.  http://healthimpactnews.com/2011/the-shocking-truth-about-freshly-squeezed-orange-juice/

The recipes look great.  I am going to try the second one but try to use my fresh squeezed.  I wonder how many oranges it takes to get a cup.

Shameless Advertising ---> No Doubt you've seen the Medeterranean diet - Healthy Eating Tips thread,

Green Smoothies are great and can contain many parts of a Mediterranean diet but it's good to get some fish, nuts, grains and dairy not to mention the occasional red meat in your diet.

... what was that about all things in moderation?

I don't think a Fish Smoothie would be a good plan ... don't know about you but I like my Fish BBQ'd and served with lots of good vegies with some fruit for desert ... Now we're talkin ...

Bottom Line: Enjoy the Green Smoothies but eat healthy outside of Smoothie consumption too.

Dave

p.s. Re: Green Smoothies, I tried making some V8 juice the other day ... it was pretty much a Fail but it'll make good soup stock.

I'm open for ideas on that or other healthy smoothies.

Today's Morning-time Green Smoothie

1/2 C Oats (place in blender first to powder)

1 C Almond Milk

1 C Cranberry Juice

1 C Orange Juice (with Pulp)

1-1/2 C Spinach leaves

1 Ripe Avacado

1 Cucumber (pealed and cut to 1/2" slices)

1 Lemon (slice into 8 parts, remove seeds and peal then throw into blender)

1 Banana

Blend until all ingredients are fully incorporated. (Makes enough for 3 servings throughout the day, this is a bit low on protein so having some nuts, cheese or fish on the side during the day is probably a good idea).

This is definitely one of the tastiest and most refreshing smoothies I've tried ... Yum, delicious! (Ya gotta try this combo, it'll make your day).

Dave

I think wheat germ is excellent to add to a smoothie.

You might want to watch adding too much if you are diabetic or otherwise have been advised against eating too many carbs but the amount you're adding in that recipe is quite small.

Here's a link on some nutritional information about wheat germ ... Wheat germ is the most vitamin- and mineral-rich part of the wheat kernel.

Thanks for the recipes, I bet they're very tasty and they are, no doubt about it ... nutritious.

Dave

It's good to keep trying new things, so far, no two I've made have been alike ... similar but not the same.

Changing the greens, in particular helps avoid mild toxins that most (all?) greens have (probably keeps the bunnies from eating too much of them).

Added Oatmeal today which was a first ... changed the texture a little and had a plesant taste and is very good for the body.

I'm having fun with this thread and makin' the smoothies, glad you've tried a couple, I certainly haven't tried them all yet.

I used to make country wines ... now I make country smoothies instead ... and do some baking ... it was a sort of a natural migration once I gave up the alcohol. Still dealing with fruits and yeast ... just that it's good for me now.

The Peanut Butter Oatmeal sounds good.  Actually so many of them do. I have tried two so far. Both were ok with the last one being the best as I decided to keep tasting it as I added ingredients so I would know if I would actually drink it! It was simple, banana, blueberries, Harvest Crunch, a bit of 2% milk, 3 ice cubes, a tiny bit of honey and some romaine lettuce. The last ingredient was a test. I do have spinach now.

Peanut Butter Oatmeal Smoothie

This looks like a great Breakfast Smoothie ... (click link above)

... it's a tad high in sodium and sugars but not bad if you watch your daily intakes.

This one packs a lot of protein for those days when you need some extra energy!

Steel Cut Oats (Not Instant) are more nutritious and tastier than the instant stuff. (I like Quaker Steel Cut Oats)

Note: You might consider grinding up (powdering) the Oatmeal before hand. This can be done in the blender just before adding other ingredients or you can make some up ahead using a food processor or spice grinder (I use an extra coffee grinder we have).

Breaking the Oatmeal down will help aid digestion and get that protein working for you a little quicker.

Factoid: Complex Carbohydrates generally take longer to digest ... this can be a good thing as it gives you energy over a longer time period . How Long Do Complex Carbs Take To Digest?

Hi Lori,

I'm so glad to hear that you liked the "Tongue Twister Special" (Bluenana Strawlmond Yogurt Drink).

Since you liked that, I bet you'd really like the "The Not-So Green Smoothie" (down this page a bit).

I'm thinking about how to incorporate some Oatmeal in mine but not sure how to best do that yet. I'm a fan of Oatmeal, always liked how it really gives me lasting strength throughout the day (I think the reason for that is that it's slower digesting than many foods).

Always open for more ideas, I liked the refreshing and tasty looking "Oreo Cookies and Cream Smoothie", I have yet to try it but it sounds like it would be great when I really get the urge to eat something sweet (and, well, feel like cheating without actually cheating).

I appreciate the feedback, Thanks!

Dave

Some information on Artificial Sweetners ... (In case you were wondering)

Note: Whenever possible, I try to use the Mayo Clinic as a source, my PCP even uses the Mayo Clinic for quite a bit of information and she is into "Good Health Through Nutrition" wherever possible along with pharmaceuticals as may be needed  ... that was enough to convince me.

How Green Smoothies Can Devastate Your Health!!

NOT! ... I call BS ... Boy, ya sure have to take some (many) things on the InterWebs with a HUGE BAG of rock salt.

Now before you give up on greens and go back to eating processed foods with copious amounts of High Fructose Corn Syrup, plain Fructose, lathered in devastating quantities of "Salt", you might want to reconsider and hear/ see what the real scoop is on Greens, cooked, chopped, steamed, blended or whole. You may notice that the re-hashed "Scare Tactics" of the article above use only one source of reference and that reference is from a previously debunked article and the link goes nowhere. (Big Red Flag ...)

Below are a few articles that let you make up your own mind on how "Devastating" ... or NOT greens can be:

One of my favorite reliable sources is the Mayo Clinic, here are some Green Smoothies from their site.

According to William Haley, M.D., a nephrologist at Mayo Clinic's Kidney Stone Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla. in regards to Kidney Stones.

Why Green Smoothies Will NOT Devastate Your Health

Not in a smoothie! Just a raw carrot with some peanut butter spread on it. It took me over 15 years to finally try it and once I did, I had wished I had not been so myopic smile They go together so well and who would have thought that.

I was actually reading that a lot of our vegies are washed in Chlorine.  Even some of the organic ones.  But anything that is preserved to last longer is not natural and therefore probably bad.

The thing is, I have put a lot of bad stuff into my body.  The benefit of the baby carrots outweighs the bad.

Peanut butter and carrots sound awesome.  Try peanut butter and jalapenos.  Cut them in half length wise.  Take out the seeds and insides and fill with peanut butter.  It is one of my favorite snacks.   Not too hot either, although, I like to eat raw habaneros so  what is NOT hot for me, might be hot for you.

I always wondered why the baby carrots got slimy after being in the fridge for a few days ... probably all that chlorine leaching out.

Thanks for that info Dave. I'm with you Scott, just threw mine in the trash too. no

In a smoothie?

If so I'll try that as soon as I get some 'chlorine free' carrots). If not I'll try it when I get some teeth. biggrin

I like carrots a LOT, not trying to scare you, just got to wondering about them and found that article.

Best carrots are, no doubt, organic ones but I can't afford to purchase organic all the time, I think the regular ones are fine.

I am starting these daily smoothies.  They definitely make me feel better.  Although this one looks awful, it was very delicious.

1.  1/2 cup of spinach

2.  Qtr Banana

3.  4 Strawberries

4.  handful of blue berries

5.  handful of Almonds

6.  Half a green apple

7.  2 baby Carrots

8.  half a container of Coconut water

9.  2 Ice Cubes.

My Bullet that I bought doesn't quite liquefy it all so some of it was crunchy but I like that.

Nothing wrong with a ice cold glass of milk!! I enjoy dairy in general. Ice Cream comes to mind, lol! Just keep your diet in decent shape, stay active and throwing in a glass of water or Gator Aid every so often is a good idea too. Sounds like you have a good handle on it. Not having a problem with headaches is fantastic. Some of you are able to avoid a lot of the side effects, all I can say is hooray! smilesmile

I have been on treatment for abt 3 weeks now. I haven't had any food cravings except one. I drink abt. half gallon of milk a day.  Maybe I should make some smoothies. I did try plain water and sugarless lemonade but it is always back to the milk. I like chocolate or a few tbsp. of coffee added to my milk. I haven't had any headaches so maybe milk is a good thing. Not fighting myself. If it is milk I crave, milk is what I get.
