Howdy mate....yes ....I could feel the paracetamol accumulating in my system...makes me quite nauseous ...and the codine dries my mouth...the 'chemist' in me from my earlier days knew of many 'cures'...this 'over the counter' world I now inhabit could learn from ..but I'm very reticent to return there...meanwhile the drug companies grow rich from our suffering....I'm in pain almost constantly...but since my regime of self regulation was commenced the severity has lessened oddly...you grow to accept maybe...and 'music' works it's magic here thankfully...one thin man to another...Graham

Hiya,
The main problem is there are not many options for HCV patients, all painkillers are toxic to some extent, I just think paracetamol is not the best option, but there isnt a lot else in the marketplace, I've read that aspirin and ibuprofen are probably just as bad, I personally stick to prescription codeine on its own, but Ive recently developed a lactose intolerance, it brings my face out in excema and lactose is an ingredient in codeine tablets, you just cant win. I'd rather have an itchy face and less hepatotoxicity though.

Hi Gonzoid,

Quite scary seeing as Paracetamol is what we are advised to take for pain/sides during tx!!.....and for 24-48 (plus) weeks....i was always under the impression that so long as we stayed within the recommended dose, then they would not cause damage.

Hugs

Paracetamol (In the USA Aceteminophen) is as far as Im concerned seriously bad news, in cases of overdose one of its major effects is hepatocellular necrosis, i.e. it kills liver cells, the dosage considered sufficient to cause serious liver damage is accepted to be about 150mg/kg body weight, for me because Im skinny thats only 9 grammes or so, which is 9 times the recommended dose.

hang on

I just googled this and found on (http://www.pharmweb.net/pwmirror/pwy/paracetamol/chart.html)
a graph maintaining that people at "Enhanced risk" i.e. us, can basically half these numbers (and if its on the internet it must be true) so 4.5 grammes is enough to seriously damage an already damaged liver, so were in the realms of a normal dose is 1/4 of the dose that can cause severe liver damage in HCV patients of my body weight, 2 tablets 4 times a day, thats 4 grammes!!! in my world regardless of what the doctor, pharmacist or whoever says, these numbers point to paracetamol actually being quite dangerous for people with HCV, even at normal dosage, and its allegedly even worse when used in conjunction with caffeine.

Imho it should be banned and furthermore if it was a new drug I dont think it would get a license to be sold OTC.

check out what the BBC had to say in 2005

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4507562.stm

hope this helps.

if you google something along the lines of "paracetamol liver" there is a  real lot about the link between liver failure and paracetamol consumption.

Hello,
I just found this article on antioxidants,
http://www.hepcchallenge.org/choices/supplements.htm
it has some interesting things to say about free radicals in the liver.
