Gidday Mehmood,

Interferon has been linked to causing serious progressive thyroid diseases, while being used to treat HepC, so you having hyperthyroidism would exclude you from being able to use it, as your doctor has told you.

Interferon in combination with ribavirin (SOC) is the gold standard tx for HepC at the moment, and while new drugs are being trialled and sooner or later released for use, they all unfortunately usually all require interferon to be used with them.

Regrettfully you need a tx that is interferon-free, and I am unaware of any such stand-alone tx's being available at this stage, although new drugs and tx's are being brought forward all the time, so hopefully something happens there for you.

In the mean-time your health and looking after yourself is of prime importance, so that you are always ready and able to take on any new tx's that may turn up.  Has your doctor offered you any alternative options, particularly in maintaining your health in this regard. ?

Cheers,

Brendan.

P.S.  Repeating the same message in lots of different sections of the forum makes little or no difference to who'll see it, once is well and truly enough.  We get the message that you are concerned.

Hi Mahmud,

Welcome to the forum. I tried to find some information for you, I'm sure there will be answers by others to follow.

Thyroid Dysfunction

Interferon therapy can be associated with changes in thyroid function, with both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism occurring. Such changes are more common in patients with a history of thyroid dysfunction.

Management

Serum thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels should be checked before, during, and after therapy. Free thyroid levels (free T4) also should be assessed if changes in TSH values are noted. Patients should be evaluated by a clinician if biochemical thyroid abnormalities are noted, and should be aware that prolonged thyroid dysfunction is a rare side effect of therapy.

Therapy can be stopped and thyroid hormone replacement can be initiated if indicated.

Best wishes,

James
