Hi Ian!

Well, I'm no doctor, but it seems to me that you may want to get the definitative test just to put your mind at ease.  I know I would if it were me.  I know the wait at the NHS has been long lately, but you might as well get on the list.  They've always come through for me in the end.  Take care, tysmile

Hi guys,

I have quite a complicated story so thanks in advance for your patience. I am originally from the UK. Whilst travelling in Australia I was diagnosed with Hep C during a routine screening for a clinical trial I was going to undertake by GSK for money. I am a low risk candidate for Hep C and have never done anything that would make me high risk, and I have double checked this again and again!

I tested positive for an Abbott Architect anti-HCV test, and they then tested the same blood sample again using a Murex HCV 4.0 test to confirm the result. This was on the same blood sample as the original test. This was in May 2010.

Upon the news I returned to the UK and went through the entire process of accepting I had the illness and coming to terms with it, which was hard. The doctors in Australia advised me there was pretty much no way it was a false positive.

In the UK I had the standard NHS Hepatitis C antibody test, which was negative. I then had the same test taken again to confirm the result, which was also negative - these were on two separate blood samples. This was in June 2010.

After this, I then had a PCR test to confirm again that I was negative, and again, this came back negative. This was in August 2010.

Finally, 6 months later, I had another antibody test by the NHS which again came back negative. This was in February 2011.

Now, I have been doing some extensive research into the matter, as the initial two positive results and subsequent negative results have left me very insecure about the tests. I have read that the RIBA test is pretty much the only test you can have that 100% confirms a false positive and that no subsequent testing is required, and that the PCR test can be falsely negative, so now I am wondering if I should get a RIBA test, or if the subsequent anti-body tests are enough to proove beyond any doubt I don't have the illness. I was wondering if any experts or doctors can offer advice on this, as I haven't been able to gain access to an expert through the NHS.

Thanks in advance,

Ian
