My wife experienced pretty much the same results as you have discribed as far as the negitive 6 mos, positive after 6 mos. It really was a severe blow for her to get the news after all the previous positive results. (this after a 24 week treatment)

She has considered all the alternitives and will commence treatment (48 weeks) once i have finished in April 2012. This time she is prepared a little better having experienced the previous side effects. When she starts the next session she willl have the other required meds to accomadate the side effects. Cymbalta - to deal with the depression, Sleeping pills available if required, Zofran - for the nausea, Aveeno - for the dry itchy skin, a better diet plan, and all the other little things we had to learn the hard way the first time. It was tough but bareable.

Keep your head up!!

Hi Wulaf and welcome to the forum.  smile  Not sure if the patient you`re talking about is yourself or not, but sorry to hear the first treatment turned out to be unsuccessful.

It`s unusual nowadays to be treated with Interferon alone, it`s more usual for people with genotype 3 to take it as part of a dual combination therapy with Ribarvirin pills.  I would think it might be a good idea for the person to talk it over with their medical team again, just to be sure.

About the length of treatment time, unfortunately yes, it is normal for people who haven`t responded the first time round to have to do 48 weeks if they treat again.

I`m not sure if that has answered your questions but please do let us know if you have any more worries and we will try to help.

All the best to you, Jill xx
