Welcome to the forum! You are not at fault for not thinking of getting the test. I'm actually surprised the doctor didn't think to do it. My fiancee has Hep C and we do have precautions. We keep gloves around in case she gets a cut and needs help or to use during sexual activities if there is a wound. We do not share nail clippers, toothbrushes, razors etc. Transmission risk is low, but it wouldn't hurt getting tested for your peace of mind periodically. I hope that everything goes well with the doctor's visit. Make sure to take care of yourself!

blood to blood contact is the only way to get hep c. so 'normal' sex shouldnt be a problem.

Thank you- since I wrote this I have been doing a lot of research that also indicates I have a really low chance of getting it from him. He has had it for a minimum of 7 years. He was an IV drug user for about a year and shared needles with his ex-girlfriend before I met him and he was pretty honest with me about that. We got tested for HIV but never for Hep C, how stupid that was! But still, we have had unprotected sex for all this time and I have not been infected. I doubt very much this late in the game I will. I just wonder if it is a chance I want to take.

I'm really overwhelmed right now because he has been doing the throwing up thing for at least 5 years now on and off. This is really making me think he has a significant amount of liver damage. He is my biggest concern right now. We have an appointment in a few days at which point I guess the doctor will take some labs and we will see where we are. I just cannot stand the thought of him being truly sick, maybe even terminal. I really hope it hasn't gone too far and I wish we had thought of having him tested way back when we had the HIV test done. I feel like I have failed him in some way by not thinking of it. I know that is stupid but it's how I feel. :(

Hi, ive been married for 12 years and probably got infected 17 years ago. My husband is healthy and so are my four children. It's not easy to transmit via sexual intercourse like HIV, but they say there is a small chance. Doctors will probably tell you it can be but once again my husban is healthy and we don't use condoms often. Throwing up- can be associated with the liver. Make sure to get all the tests done and check for liver function. Sometimes I felt nauseous after eating a heavy or greasy meal or a piece of meat. Unhealthy liver sometimes cannot process the fat and it makes you sick.

Today my BF of 6 years found out from the Plasma center that he is infected with Hep C. I am not infected but have been defered as a donor because I am his partner, probably a smart move. I guess what I want to know is whether or not we should begin taking precautions in terms of sex now that we do know he has it.

 

I made a doctor's appointment for him 5 days from now to begin looking into his health and find out where he is at and whether he is actually ill or if the virus is dormant. He HAS been throwing up sporadically over the past five years and does complain of hip pain and belly pain but we thought he had food allergies and a pinched nerve. Now I am wondering if this isn't something related to the Hep C.

 

I have read lots of places that it's hard to get through regular intercourse and he and I have not used condoms for a really, really long time yet I still do not have the virus. Right now the plan is to use them and have me get retested in 6 months. Can anyone shed any light on whether this is the right way to handle things?
