Huey,

I've been in-out of AA for 34 years with fairly notable lengths of sober/clean time on occasion. And through seventeen 28 day inpatient rehabs and some other very helpful attempts to keep me from committing the slow suicide that I was. And through it all were countless promises to myself to never drink again followed always eventually by another relapse, and looking back I see that I never made a firm commitment to myself that I wanted to live rather than keep on the road I was on that would obviously end in jail, institutions or death.

Last January, when I was admitted to the hospital for paracentesis, I made that firm commitment to myself and I take action each and every day to remind myself of how precious this life is, and how fragile my poor body has become after years of assault.

So I assure you I don't think your wrong and I also assure you I won't be jumping off any wagon again anytime soon. I'm in no hurry to find out what the ICD-9-CM code is for 'dead'!

If you think I am wrong or just wonder, do me a favour, Don't fall off the waggon and test it to see if that word goes away, OK?

Ha Ha, My infectious disease Dr did quickly ask if I had been staying clean & sober. I told him yes, I've had no alcohol, street drugs, wild women or cigarettes. He had no doubt I was being honest and even commented on how much better I look and how I seem to feel much better than I did 7 months ago. So I suspect I got my 'good flag' on this visit. biggrin

Hi Mike, Hay man, I think you are looking at this a little skewed , What that means is they at that time did not see any clinical proof of what the cause is in THAT test, The results are from that test and are subject to the parameters of that test, This does not mean your history does not exist but for the purpose  of that test it does.  Hope that makes since.

It is also Doctor speek for you are being good, what ever they are looking for to see if you are not staying sober is in or shows up in that test, because they have a note you don't see telling them to look for this, that wording is used to flag you as OK. Ahh, I see. I do remember seeing the description given in your link on some piece of my paperwork somewhere along the way - "Cirrhosis of liver without mention of alcohol".

I don't see anything that fit's better in the 570's list because 571.2, (Alcoholic cirrhosis of liver), suggest cirrhosis caused by alcohol only, which in my case of having HCV also, would not be completely accurate.

Thanks Tig!

Malcolm is right. It's the ICD-9-CM code for reimbursement. It's a code that covers a number of issues pertaining to cirrhosis.

Hi Mike,

Ok, I'll disregard. I was just curious. biggrin

I went to my infectious disease Dr. yesterday and received an "encounter Form" in order to show I attended my appointment so I can get gas $ reimbursement for 105 miles of gas. On the form it list some of my health issues including 571.5 cirrhosis. But why is the word 'cryptogenic' included? I googled and found that 'cryptogenic cirrhosis' refers to 'of unknown cause'. My Dr know fully well that I have a 20+ year history of HCV + active alcoholism for many years longer than that. So I can't understand what the terms on this form are referring to? Any ideas, or is this just a 'typo' in effect?
