Here is what the folks over at hepatiscentral.com have to say about coconut oil:

"Based on the facts, switching over to coconut oil could help the liver defend against Hepatitis C. However, coconut oil may also foster a rise in cholesterol a situation that could aggravate the liver's well-being. Until more definitive research is available, the decision to consume coconut oil is personal  as there is not yet sound advice for including or excluding coconut oil from a Hepatitis C diet."

http://www.hepatitiscentral.com/mt/archives/2011/04/should_you_incl.html

So, it might help but it just as easily might hurt the liver.  The research is incomplete and inconclusive.  Whether one wants to take that chance is a personal choice.  One thing I am certain of is that there is plenty of money to be made in the world of alternative medicine.  Interestingly, they haven't discovered a way to kill the virus (which is the only proven way to stop the damage) but traditional medicine has.

ya your proably right on the cirrotic saturated fat thing ... as i am will be 31... and i only weigh 130-135 lbs... so the aturated fat is proably good for me... lol im poor i would eat more high calorie meals ...

um lets see ILL punch up google real quick on Lauric acid which was my whole point as to why i take it myself....

In vitro experiments have suggested that some fatty acids including lauric acid could be a useful component in a treatment for acne, but no clinical trials have yet been conducted to evaluate this potential benefit in humans.[13][14]

Lauric acid increases total serum cholesterol the most of any fatty acid. But most of the increase is attributable to an increase in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) (the "good" blood cholesterol). As a result, lauric acid has been characterized as having "a more favorable effect on total:HDL cholesterol than any other fatty acid, either saturated or unsaturated".[15] In general, a lower total/HDL serum cholesterol ratio correlates with a decrease in atherosclerotic risk.[16] Nonetheless, an extensive meta-analysis on foods affecting the total/LDL serum cholesterol ratio found in 2003 that the net effects of lauric acid on coronary artery disease outcomes remained uncertain.

Benefits to the Liver

The medium chain triglycerides and fatty acids may aid in preventing liver diseases as these substances are easily converted into energy when they reach the liver. This will help in reducing the work load on the liver and preventing accumulation of fat.

Since the coconut oil is antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal your liver may be free to deal with other issues, such as improving your metabolism. Medium chain fatty acids abundantly present in the oil may assist in maintaining your livers health by destroying microbes and minimizing free radical formation.

Studies have also shown that the MCFAs may prevent alcohol-induced liver damage by suppressing free radical development. Possibly this nutritious oil can shoulder some of your livers work and provide it with a constant supply of energy.

MCFAs may even aid in keeping the liver from clogging up with cholesterol!

heres a cirrotic coconut article thingy

http://www.livestrong.com/article/329446-coconut-oil-in-the-liver/

my spoonnfull is equivelant to proably 2 tbsp of organic 100 percent from wallmart in a mason jar coconut oil...

it taste pretty bland but has many benifets ... i put it up right up there with Turmeric

Less is more it says pretty much....

the cirrotic thing does kinda make you think twice about anything but if it were me with cirosiis id ingest the same amount....

Hold on there.  The fact that it hasn't harmed you (to the best of your knowledge) is not conclusive evidence that it would be "totally safe" for say a 60 year old cirrhotic who might be reading this.  I just did a bit of research, and coconut oil is actually a saturated fat, and not a particularly good one.  Saturated fats are linked to coronary heart disease.  What to believe?

I also discovered that the alleged benefits of coconut oil are widely disputed by some fairly smart physicians and dieticians.  The arguments against its use are as well supported in fact and research as those in favor of it. Which begs the question: "Why ingest something that may be useless or even harmful when it isn't necessary?"

If only this was true, Josh.  Let's see if these magic words actually work:    "Research it-or see attached file...."

The benefits of Coconut oil have been published repeatedly and those reports are easily found. Provided it's used in a responsible manner, I can't help but find advantages in it's addition to your daily care.

Found this review:

Oil pulling is a suggestive misnomer, implying that something bad is being pulled from the mouth (toxins and bacteria). What little scientific evidence exists shows that it is probably not as effective as standard mouth wash, and what benefit it has is likely entirely due to the mechanical act of swishing to remove particles and bacteria from teeth and gums.

There is no reason either theoretically or based upon any evidence to recommend oil pulling (which should be renamed oil-swishing) instead of standard modern health care with flossing, tooth-brushing, and mouth rinse. However, it does appear to be better than nothing, and might have a role in developing countries without access to modern oral care. The one caveat is that extended periods of swishing that are commonly recommended (10-20 minutes) are likely not necessary and further present a risk of lipoid pneumonia from accidentally breathing in small amounts of oil.

Oil pulling for general health or any other indication is pure pseudoscience. Detox claims are based on nothing, as are all detox claims. There is no evidence or plausible rationale to recommend oil pulling for any indication other than as a poor substitute for oral care.

I don't know much about this but I would be reluctant to try it before asking my dentist and perhaps my hepatologist for their opinions.  HCV and the tx drugs (especially Interferon) can really mess with out teeth and gums so I wouldn't want to do anything to potentially add fuel to the fire.

I have been having issues with my gums lately and washing my mouth with a mixture of baking soda and salt water has worked wonders.  I read about using baking soda as a mouthwash in an excellent book called "Hepatitis & Liver Disease," written by Hepatologist Melissa Palmer, MD.

I've been hearing about Oil Pulling a lot recently. It is the act of swishing coconut or other oil of choice in your mouth for several minutes and spitting it out.  Supposedly the benefits go beyond just oral health.  If you've done it or do it can I have some reviews?
