My PCP said that high ALT and AST are caused by inflammation of the liver and that symptoms like portal hypertension, an enlarged spleen, and platelets are caused by the scarring/cirrhosis of the liver. So, when the Hepatitis C is gone the inflammation goes away and our liver enzymes like ALT and AST go down to normal healthy levels, but things like platelets can remain low because of the cirrhosis. I was confused about how these all relate to the liver.

Hi Bubble,

Heres another link that explains Liver Function studies. The AST = SGOT and the ALT = SGPT. they aren't referred to that way much anymore, but you still see it mentioned occasionally.

I found this site helpful but Mallani is the best at explaining  test results.
