I am not very good with medical terms yet you make it so easy to understand. He is being "mapped" at 7:00 AM on Friday the 9th.  The doctor explained the Y-90. She also reports it comes from Toronto, Canada. We both felt relief after speaking with her, and you made me feel even better.  I'll let you know when he goes for the actual procedure. We are thinking the end of October or first week in November.  So we should know if it "worked" by Christmas.  WE are traveling to Domincan Republic December 12th.  Hopefully we will have another thing to celebrate besides being free from Hep C.  Thanks everyone.  Hope everything goes well Friday and they can use this course of treatment.

Hi Laura, I am happy to hear that Tom had the mapping done. The actual procedure is usually done between 2 to 3 weeks after the mapping.

When Angelo had it done, it was as an outpatient and  it killed the tumor 90% and shrunk it over 1 cm. On October 1st. we went back to Mt. Sinai and they did an ablation to the remaining 10% that was left viable.  He had to stay overnight to make sure everything went well.

going back in 4 weeks to see how well everything turned out.

Please keep in touch.

Hi Laura,

Sounds good. Tom will be having a TARE (Trans Arterial Radioactive Embolisation).

Over here we use beads called TheraSphere that contain radioactive Yttrium 90.

The liver receives blood from both the hepatic artery and the portal vein. Luckily, HCC's get their blood from the hepatic artery branches. It's quite easy to find the feeding artery or arteries, and inject the beads cutting off blood supply to the tumour. It doesn't matter whether both are fed from the same artery- you just go around and block them all.

Hope all goes well. SVR should stop the rapid regeneration of nodules that cause the HCC's to form. Cheers.

Hi Laura, good to hear from you. Thanks for explaining the radioembolization process to us, how amazing is modern medicine!  It all sounds very hopeful, thank goodness.

I`m sure Tom`s doctor is right that he has beaten the Hep C, the fact that he was still undetected at a month post tx is indeed a pretty safe bet of SVR!

He`s made remarkable progress, and I wish you both all the very best of luck!

We`ll be looking out for your next update, take care...  smile

That's good news Laura! Yes medicine has come a long way with treatments and the fact that Tom was being monitored for this possibility and this was caught early makes a world of difference. I'm so happy for Toms SVR news and I'm sure that makes dealing with this last obstacle much easier to get through. You and Tom are certainly in my prayers and please do keep us up to date on his progress. smile

Hey Laura,

That's good news and I can read the relief in your words. I know there is some distance to travel, but the outlook sounds very promising! It is amazing what they can accomplish now in the field of medicine. This procedure has helped many people and we're all keeping our hopes high and prayers for you and Tom going.

It never gets old hearing your doctor repeat that you have achieved SVR! I imagine Tom has a look somewhere between elation and disbelief when he hears it. It's a great feeling that none of us will forget. I hope with the advent of these miracle drugs, we start hearing more and more success stories soon.

Good luck....  smile

Hi all,

Just wanted to let you all know we went back to Mt. Sinai and met with the radiologist.  Tom has two small tumors which they want to do radioembolization on.  They will call to schedule him for a mapping to ensure he will be able to be treated this way. The doctor see's no issues as of now. Then we will return for him to have the radiation beads fed through his veins to the liver tumors. they hope both tumors are feeding off the same blood vessel.  Doc reports now many people have a good chance at beating liver cancer due to the advancement and and amazing drug harvoni. she reports she beleives Tom is hep C free and this alone, is a huge accomplishment for his way of life and his liver.  We will find out a month after if the procedure was successful.  If not, the awesome thing is, they can do it again........very grateful, very happy.....there is hope for everyone out there.  I pray to God that anyone carrying the hep c virus.....can have access to harvoni, as this is what i call the "miracle drug".  Thank you to everyone on the forum....so far, my story has a happy ending.........Keep him in your prayers.....

Laura and Tom

Hi Laura.

I'm sad to hear about the MRI result. It's good Tom has been doing them every 3 months to catch this early so he is still in the game. I'll be praying for a positive outcome. Keep us up to date.

Hi Laura,

Really sad to hear the news. Hopefully it can be ablated or radioembolised.

My thoughts are with you and Tom.

Hi Laura... I`m really sorry to hear that Tom`s MRI showed up a tumour and I hope and pray that his surgeon will be able to treat it by radioimbolization.  He has a brilliant medical team who have looked after him very well so far, and I`m sure they will continue to give Tom the excellent treatment and care he deserves.

And now on to the good news..  Tom`s latest undetected result is excellent, congrats to him!  I can understand his reticence to feel too optimistic yet, but it`s definitely looking very promising that he has beaten the Dragon, let`s hope so!

Sending all good wishes your way, and a big hug to you Laura.  I know you have to stay strong to give support to Tom, so make sure you look after yourself too.

Hoping with all my heart for good news in your next update, and in the meantime you know where we are if you need to talk.

Take care and thanks for letting us know what`s been happening.

Hi all,

Went back to Mt Sinai Friday for Tom's MRI lthree month liver scan.  Sad news, the "shadow" which was seen three months ago is still there.  They determined it is a small tumor in the middle of his liver. The surgeon cannot remove it surgically like the previous one.   We are very disappointed that his cancer has returned.  We will be meeting with a team of radiologists soon who will map out his veins so they can radioimbolization the tumor.  We have a wonderful team of staff there who we love and trust. It is frusterating to go 2 years clean and then to get this breaking news.  On the positve note, his NP just called him today from Mt Sinai to report he is still hep c free after 30 days off of harvoni. We do beleive this is the "miracle drug". I am thrilled with the news, Tom seems to not actually beleiving he won the battle until his viral count is 0 after six months.  I beleive he has beaten the dragon.  Never before has he still been at 0 a month after treatment.  To everyone out there fighting, continue the fight.  The ouitcome is so worth it. I pray the cancer gets blasted out of his liver as he is a fighter, and this is hopefully another battle he will win.  I know a few of you have had this treatment done and have had positive results.....please say a prayer for him as well.  As always, grateful to have you all hear for shoulder to lean and cry on.  I have to stay strong for him.  Positive vibes and healing go out to all fighting this battel.  The end results are so worth the fight.

Fondly,

Laura and Tom
