Okay, I don't want to get too far off topic (base) here, but all this metaphorical talk about Twinkies saddens me. You see, my wife hasn't been terribly interested in Twinkies lately.... no

Hi Steampunk,

I suspect I've had hep C over 20 years, but I wasn't diagnosed until 3 years ago. I had a couple of previous partners I contacted to inform, and i've been with my husband over 13 years. Like most people in a stable relationship, and trying to conceive, I had unprotected sex. I wasn't careful when I cut myself as I never in a million years assumed I'd have hep C. I have no drug background, nor particulary risky behaviours, but I do have piercings and a couple of tattoos - the things we do when we're young!!!To put your mind at ease, I informed people it could have affected so they could test. I was told I didn't have to take any special precautions with my husband sexually as well, 13 years and no issues when I wasn't being precautious kinda hints it is a low risk. However, for piece of mind, I insist (although he is not to happy about it) to cover the twinkie with a wrapper. :)

Hello again Mark,

Firstly, yes, it`s quite possible that you`ve had the infection for a long time but not been aware of it.  Many people are infected for decades before they notice any symptoms from HCV and some people never get any symptoms at all.  If that is the case then the virus will actually have been active the whole time.  It`s a disease that in most cases progresses very slowly.

Secondly, as far a sex is concerned, the risk of passing it on to your girlfriend is very low, even with unprotected sex.  The general rule is that there`s a much higher risk when `rough sex` is involved, but in a long term monogamous relationship the risk is extremely low indeed.  Hep C is a blood borne virus and there has to be `blood to blood` contact for the infection to be passed on to someone else.

Do be careful not to share things like nail clippers, razors, toothbrush, etc, with your girlfriend or anyone else though because there is a slight risk of transmitting the virus via anything that could possibly have tiny traces of blood on it.  Generally speaking though, the risk of infecting anyone else in a normal household setting is really very low, as many people here will be able to confirm!

Hope that helps...  smile

Hi cinnamon girl thankyou for your reply just a couple of questions is it possible I've had this problem for years and only now it has become active recently and how likely is it to pass on to my girlfriend with unprotected sex?

Hello Mark, I haven`t spoken to you before although I have read your threads.  Welcome!

Your viral load falls in the low range, which on its own doesn`t tell us much apart from the fact that you have an active HCV infection..  And actually your VL doesn`t make any difference as far as treatment is concerned.

What will be a lot more important are your genotype and level of fibrosis, and sounds like you`ll be finding those out in due course.

Keep us posted on any progress, and try not to worry too much.... smile

Just been informed that my viral load is 175,532 iu/ml don't know if that is high or low or what that means in respect of treatment
