Hats off to you David. I think you will find a lot of the anxiety re bloods and side effects disapates once you finish with RIBA. It plays with your head and I'm sure you can see how amazing the progress has been for most of the blood results. Also know you understand that a 25 year old assault on your body is ending and that worrying about the war wounds is pretty counterproductive.

hope you get to have a quiet, grateful celebration with your wonderful family.

Syd

Hi Tiger,

Glad to hear from you again.

Glad you are doing AMAZINGLY well, despite the riba penalty.

Wonderful progress you have made (for all that hard work).

Und since week 4!, and, just compare your pre-treatment levels to your 16 week levels!!! - Alt from 208 to 20, and Bili from 20 to 11!!! Just super. I will look forward to seeing your bili come down even further (and perhaps GGT and AFP too).

Yes, your GGT was up, as was your AFP, but as you have relayed (noting what imaging tests they have done, and, that they will repeat them in future), I agree with Tig, that it sounds like they are and will be screening you adequately.

Don't fret unduly about the AFP, it is understandable (when any lab is not within limits), but I kinda know of what they speak when they say an AFP "is not reliable", and I kinda agree (from what I have read) - whilst undergoing the ravages of having HCV and throughout treatment thereof, until the aftermath of the infection has cleared and your liver has "quieted" to nice equilibrium again, you may just find your AFP has or will unceremoniously retreat, over time, downward toward a lower number, all on it's own! Without further stress and insult/injury to your liver you may likely see improvements in some of your previously abnormally elevated blood tests, such as BIL/GGT/AFP.

For your own piece of mind, AFTER EOT, you could ask your doc to re-test your AFP, GGT (or anything that was previously higher than normal), to see for yourself what has improved. If he is reluctant, express to him that you would find it personally/psychologically reassuring to know your all bloods are returning to be normal (just as your Alts and VL have). He probably will, just to placate you. The imaging is an important guiding component that allows many docs to let that trump over any other lessor indicators. But all indicators should be considered together, and not just any one in isolation.

I did the very same thing, I had to request of my doc (out of his cooperative kindness) to repeat any prior abnormal bloodwork for me, after ETO, just to reassure me. I did find it reassuring, affirming and worth it.

Don't know how you do it young fella, working, young family, on your feet with a sore foot!, with lack of sleep from and with the ravages of riba! Amazingly tough you are. Sorry about that foot thing tho, do what you can for it in the meantime (anything you can think of), rather than just suffering and waiting. Doc's had no advice or ideas for it??

Hang in there, aaaallllmost done! smile C.

Sounds like they covered all the bases! That's a good habit to get in. None of us want any unwanted surprises and if we get one, we want it to be real early on. The only way that's done is being commited to a good screening program. I think your doctors and nurses have proven their desire to do just that. Keep us informed!

Hi David,

You mention "scanned" for HCC. What type of scan was it? With a large fatty cirrhotic liver, you should be requesting alternating ultrasounds and MRI's to monitor for HCC. A high AFP and cirrhosis warrants proper observation/screening every 6 months. They have found alternating methods a good idea.
