recently diagnosed. even a very small amt of alcohol wipes me out! [i used to be able to drink alot at times.] if it doesn't have this effect on you, still it is greatly affecting you most likely. even a small amt. you just aren't aware of it as acutely as some. maybe because of the mix of symptoms and all the tiredness in general. but it is making you so much more tired yet whether you know it or not. and who knows what else?

hoping this will strengthen and encourage you to stay away from it, even tho it can be hard. [i know.] you can do it.

Yeah I don't know about anyone else. But gi girls check me for alcohol in my urine once a month and I haven't had a drink in years. Not that they should believe me. They even suggested mouthwash with alcohol might show up in my urine.

I'm happy to report that the last thing in the world I desire while on TX is a drink.  I think that's true for most people, no?  I've also read posts from people who have completed TX a year or more ago, and they say the desire to drink has left them; it's just not appealing anymore.

I'd change the antidepressants.   I've been on celexa and wellbutrin for 10 years, and it took 6 months to find a combination I was comfortable with.  Some had unacceptable side effects.

Wellbutrin is  usually well accepted, from what I understand, so maybe the effexor is the problem.   Maybe wellbutrin alone?

My doctor is the top addiction/depression psychiatrist at Columbia University, runs studies, published, blah blah blah.  He says its a crap shoot.

Dude!  Give your liver a break.

The answer is you can but if you already have liver damage it will only continue to worsen if you continue to drink.

Time for another hobby, perhaps?  Needlepoint, cricket, stamp collecting?biggrin

294288_2450301347811_1560326850_32629333_1571314873_n.jpg It is your life, no one can live it for you.

I have not touched a drop since diagnosis with Type 3A.

Or during 12 months of Treatment, and the following months while I await SVR.

I have been told, in no uncertain terms never to touch alcohol ever again.

The HCV, not drink related, left me with !00% Fibrosis, Chronic Cirrohsis, also Oesteopenia, and I have 3 columns of Oesaphageal Varices, I also have treatment for Calcium & Vit D deficency and my teeth are falling apart.

Drink would not only magnify the conditions but also slow or arrest the Repair process.

If you can't live without drinking, that will be a problem.

But you have to be alive to drink at all.

My advice? And I am a Biker which means an engrained drinking culture, is don't do it again, believe me you can do without, takes a bit of time but the older you get, the older you wanna get!

At the end of the day it will be your call, this is just advice, that's all.

But speak to your healthcare providers and seek their opinion, you will find the general consensus is to stay sober.

I have been asessed for possible future Liver Transplant and meet the criteria, but you are tested every month for signs of Alcohol and Tobacco, if detected positive you are off the list, no second chances.

Take Care my Friend, I wish you well.

Steve.

Hi again Kandice, You had one last hooray with the drinking, hey? It's okay.  Just take care of yourself for the rest of the night and if you can, start drinking lots of water even now. The urge to drink will probably not be as strong once you start treatment but yes, you should not drink while on tx. I have to go for now, feel free to send me a PM if you have trouble with drink cravings. I will try to help.
Randy

My best friend would not stop the drugs and alcohol, It had to be the worest way to dye so slow, He drowned in his own fluids. He was 46 it's been ten years, I still miss him. Its not worth it! If you have Hep c or have Hep c it's not worth it to have a drink.

Hi, and welcome.

I too got hep c being careless.  But the good news is the majority of people are beating this with treatment.

One other big reason not to drink on treatment is it messes up your blood work.  These tests are important, and alcohol does things like raising your AST (SGOT) level.  They watch this level to check for liver damage from things like the meds themselves.  Like Shaun said, they WILL stop TX if they know you are drinking, they told me so.

Fear before you start is normal...I think we all felt that before starting.  But as soon as you start, it seems like a determination to beat this virus takes over, and the fear leaves.

Treatment can be rough, but finding this forum will go a long way in helping you with information, side effect tips, and general support.  Ask lots of questions, drink LOTS of water, and DON'T miss any doses.

Good Luck!

Brad

They put me on welbutrin a few weeks into treatment.  Im still on it so it's OK.  It made the side effects more tolerable.

My standard answer is:

If you have hep c and your drinking that's not good.

If I had lung cancer would I smoke?  This is hard enough to do without handicapping yourself right from the start.

This is serious business. Life and death for many of us. If your not ready mentally to start this I would wait until I was ready to go all in on this.

Good luck!

There is no safe amount of alcohol when you have Hepatitis C period.   Drinking while on treatment will just lessen your chances of success, cause unknown side effects, make the known side effects worse, and you would most likely be forced to stop treatment if your medical provider found out.

Alcohol takes 72 hours to leave your system. You should discuss this with your medical provider before you begin treatment.   Most likely they will have you delay starting treatment for a few days until the alcohol is out of your system.
