Hi mrmorency,

davesf is correct about about Interferon being a chemo drug - it's used to treat various cancers.

if you put "Interferon" in the search box on the above site, it comes up with all the types of interferon, including the types used in Hep C treatment. It;s classed as " immunotherapy".

Just as davesf said, it used to be given as chemo (probably not currently, not sure) BUT the piece of information it sounds like you need is does you mother have a Hepatitis C viral load? If she does her Hep C is still in her body, if not I would guess it is not and something else is going on?? It would take a blood test to know, unless I missed something and it is known she still has Hep C.

One of the drugs we take for treatment is Interferon.  It is a chemo drug.

Hey guys and gals... I'm new here but not new to the Hep-C information search. My mother was diagnosed with Hep-C about 10 years ago. She had a blood transfusion immediately after birth and that's how they say she got it.  She had treatment and for whatever reason the treatments stopped and she remained some what symptom free for the last 9 years.

Recently she's noticed weight gain, energy levels going down and swelling around the feet and ankles. She went back to the doctor who she went to years ago. What she's telling me is that it's all related back to her Hep-C. Apparently after preliminary testing the doctor has already told her she would need to begin a treatment of chemotherapy. Confused, I asked her if she has cancer and she said no. She added the doctor wanted to do more blood work and other tests to "determine what's going on".

I'm not sure if my mom's witholding information for sake of my feelings or if her doctor truly doesn't know. But, why would they prescribe chemotherapy to begin immediately if they didn't have some inclination of what's going on? I've tried to do searches on Google to find some correlation between Hep-C and chemotherapy treatment, to no avail. Most sites refer to chemotherapy as a cancer treatment only.

Any information on  this matter would be greatly appreciated.
