The viral load (VL) can be very variable and does not relate to the degree of liver damage. A low VL before Rx ( below 800,000) may indicate a better chance of response. I started off with 1.28m, this had dropped to 3,030 after week 4, and I was Undet. by weeks 8 and 12. This is called an early virological response (EVL) and is a better indicator of chance of response. The range of VL can be a few hundred thousand to many millions.

The viral load is a count of the number of "strands" of virus in a certain volume of blood. It can be a very high number. Before treatment mine was nearly 6 million. I have heard others say theirs was even higher than that. If treatment is working the number drops rapidly at first, then becomes undetectable. Then hopefully it stays that way. Alan

uh, I don't think so exactly...it has to do with how may replications of the virus is swimming around, although a very high number wouldn't be good. Also they can tell how treatment is coming along by how many fewer are being replicated (after a baseline test). Other folks here have allot more info on that, I'm sure they will be along soon. Blessings, Iris
