I found the guided biopsy rather painful, I could feel the needle going in but not the incision (no pain killer just number the skin area). Saying that, it is no more so than a dentist. It was swift, but nothing I would want to do on a regular basis. I dread to think what the old biospy was like! I guess we are all different with varying pain thresholds. I'm glad it went smooth. :D

 There's really not much to it. They numb the area, clean it, make you raise your right hand over your head, take a couple deep breaths and hold them. They do what they do. No real pain but there is a unfamiliar discomfort involved. Then just lay back and watch T.V. and nap. They'll come monitor your vitals for a while, then go home. It can be scary, but it's not as bad as I'm sure you've imagined.

I too had a biopsy in the late 90s. When they told me I needed another one, I was horrified. The 1st one felt like I got stabbed twice with a dull Ice Pick. This time was a breeze. Quick ultra sound, IV, sleepy juice and I woke up in a bed watching TV for a few hours. Absolutely felt nothing.

I'm glad I read this forum. I am having a biopsy done in San Antonio on Wednesday and was wondering what it all entails. I almost youtubed it but I figured that would make it worse.lol. I'm just going to suck it up and do it.

who did that Doc Holiday ? how old was this guy LOL

I think I had an X ray or MRI with contrast they marked and stuct me

I didn't find it to be painful either a little sleepy time med and local   peice a cake

I think my doctor did what you would call an "old fashioned" biopsy. I laid on my left side. The nurse started an IV in the back of my hand, and gave me some sort of twilight anesthesia. She told me the doctor would ask me to take a few good breaths, blowing through my lips so he could hear me, and take the sample when I stopped breathing. He numbed the area with some topical anesthetic, did a brief ultrasound, and drew some marks on my skin. Then he very quickly took the sample with a needle, and I was asked to lie on a roll of bandages on the biopsy "wound" for two hours, applying constant pressure to it. My wife drove me home, and that was that. I would do it again if asked to. Scary as it sometimes sounds, a liver biopsy is not so bad.

I was always scared of the biopsy and the pain associated with it. Happy to hear it went well and painless!

 Hi all, was anyone else suprised at how painless  a liver biopsy is now? I thought he was still numbing area and pop and click its was done. Small dressing and lay back and watch TV . What a nightmare in old times to have them go in between  the ribs without ultra sound to guide. Then have to lay on the area on a towel roll four  hours. I was scared out of my wits and had to laugh at myself for beingso misinformed.I left the medical field 11 yrs ago and never looked back, I feel so stupid.

Hi Michaele, Thanks for sharing this. I hope this reassures some forum members. I have had 3 and have not had any problems. BTW, you cannot develop portal hypertension unless you are cirrhotic (F4). You need to be cirrhotic for some time to raise your portal venous pressure.
