Low platelets are common in cirrhotics and especially during Rx. At 48 weeks my platelets were down to 38,000 ( normal range 150,000- 400,000). Before Rx, my platelets were 185,000. Low platelets are not really a problem, unless you like playing with sharp knives. If your doctor is worried, you can get a transfusion of platelets or use a drug like Promacta.

White blood cells will drop due to bone marrow suppression from Riba and Peg. The neutrophil count is the only important one. I dropped to 0.7 and some have dropped to 0.5 Again, this is not a big deal, but drugs like Neupogen will cause rapid rise in Neutrophils.

Low Hb and RBC'c are often treated by lowering the dose of Riba. Blood transfusion may be needed for severe cases, and Procrit is often prescribed in the USA when the HB drops below 10. I dropped to 7.1 which made life difficult, but I was almost back to normal(16.5) 8 weeks after Rx finished.

How you're managed depends on your doctor. Rx has been stopped in many cases.

I understood that there is a medication available to boost WC production. My doc mentioned to me that should my WC level plummet and throw me in an anemic tail spin, he would admit me long enough to get a blood transfusion.  I had trouble with that the first time, 16 years ago. I was stopped back in that day.

Hello,

Does anyone have information about how to manage low platelets and if there are any new studies going on for no responders?

Thanks.
