I drew blood for years and I agree with all of the descriptions here. Dr. M is absolutely right, she struck a nerve and the shock you felt was contact with it. I would be sure your doctor is aware of the incident and I recommend filing an incident report with the laboratory that drew the blood. It's like any workplace accident, a report needs to be made in the event that nerve has been damaged. It happens a lot unfortunately from improper procedure. Since this tech (and I use that reference lightly) has hurt you repeatedly, she needs to be retrained or replaced. It's obvious she has terrible technique! I imagine she has had several complaints filed and yours may be the one that helps others in the future. Good luck Hillary!

Hi Hillary,

Your 'phlebotomist' has obviously hit a nerve, probably the MAC nerve. That is just lousy technique.  You need to have it checked out, as permanent damage can be done.  In the USA it has been the subject of countless lawsuits.  Never go back to her.

One gal at the hospital where I get my CT scans with contrast has said (as the needle goes in the wrong place again) "I usually don't miss"    I guess I am unusual.  Blood draws are done locally in the clinic and the technicians there are great - relatively painless with little bleeding.  Like many here, my low blood counts have led to anemia and increased incidents of bleeding from cuts and sometimes my gums.  Kind of comes and goes (the excessive bleeding).

Ask your Dr. about the pain.  I know I have some roving very localized pains that occur in various places and are fleeting - last less than a minute, but in different places for no apparent reason.  This is different than yours, but besides the common symptoms that many people feel, I think some people have weird little symptoms which may or not be related but which are your own special symptom.

How special.

Oh I also wondered before about this woman bc I always get the same one- after she draws my blood it usually bleeds a lot more then when other people do it but I just chalked it up with my blood levels maybe it's harder to clot now? Idk it's pretty bad bc I talked to a nurse as my gastro drs office that said it shoul be fine BUT thankfully I get to change my blood draw day to Thursdays now which opens up so many better places I can go! she said I can see my PC dr if I'm worried about the pain- which of course I am so I just wondered if others have ever been thru something like this. Should I leave it alone or see my dr? Thankyou for your input, it hadn't ever been this bad!

So, since we all have to get regular bloodwork I wondered if anyone had a similar issue? I get bloodwork on Sundays, usually- and most labs are closed so the one I go to the woman is always so horrible! Always bruise and she has the move the needle in my arm to hit the vein. It always hurts and I mean other techs can get it so easily- sometimes I hardly feel it... Well this last Sunday when she stuck the needle in my arm I felt a shock thru my arm and in my hand.. It felt like one of those shocking lighters- only way I know how to describe it- and she just moved it and got the blood I felt like I was gonna faint and bolted outta there! So I am on the computer and work and when I type or even move my arm I feel this horrible shock in my arm/hand I figured it would subside but as of today it hurts worse! Even in my sleep or daily activities.. So am I being paranoid is there Even anything I can so to help this awful feeling? Anyone ever have something similar happen or know anything about this?

Hey Hillary

Wow that's really horrible, please never go their again. I had a bad experience with a rookie that gave me a bruise and had pain for a few days but it healed on its own.

With what you describe its May take a lot longer for your situation to heal, she may have hit a nerve or something else.

A skilled Phlebotomist which my trial sponsor had for all my draws never caused pain and never left a bruise (hematoma) on my arm. One thing she taught me was to keep pressure on the spot of draw with the cotton gauze for a couple of minutes after the draw.

A technician like you had should be reported and re-trained for another position.

Hoping it heals up soon for you Hillary
