Hi Ellen, it`s great to hear you`re going to be starting treatment with Sovaldi (sofosbuvir) soon, you should do very well on that.  We only have one member so far who has started tx (treatment) with Sovaldi as it only became available very recently.

The full prescribing information from Gilead lists the main side effects for your tx combo as fatigue, headache, nausea, insomnia and anemia, which are all common sx (side effects) you`d expect from any treatment which includes interferon and ribavirin.  It does tend to vary quite a lot from person to person with most Hep C treatments though, and you won`t necessarily experience all of those.

The weekly interferon injection is likely to cause tiredness and `flu like` symptoms for a day or two, and ribavirin is also often associated with itchiness and irritability, although as you`re genotype 1 you`ll only be on the drugs for 12 weeks and will hopefully avoid some of the sx which can build up over time.

Try not to worry, just take it day by day, and best of luck!  If you keep in touch we`ll be here for you!  smile

Hello again Ellen! I'm glad you've decided to go forward with treatment. Do you have any new information about yourself since you met with your doctor? I looked back at our first discussion and you were very anxious about that first appointment. How did it go with your doctor? Do you have any updated blood tests, like your viral load, biopsy, etc? Everything you can share will help us provide you with the information you're seeking.

I have just completed 28 weeks of treatment with Interferon, Ribavirin and Victrelis. So I can provide you info on those two drugs from experience and Sofosbuvir (Sovaldi) from new information just released and we have members that have taken it in trials, so they'll likely give you some help too. The first day shouldn't worry you. Anxious yes, but worry no! The Interferon is given by injection once per week and you will be required to take it every week on the same day and time. You may develop aches and pains, perhaps a low fever, but it's tolerable. It's best to take it in the evening, so you can go to bed and the side effects will be easier to deal with. If your doctor gives you permission to take Tylenol or an NSAID, that will help provide some relief if you experience any discomfort. Those side effects generally last for the next half day or so and will lessen with each additional day. The Ribavirin is generally given twice daily, 12 hours apart and the dose is determined by your doctor. If it is the same as my dose, you'll take 1200 mg per day, which is 3 tabs morning and night usually. It's absolutely required to take it on time, every time and you shouldn't miss any doses at all, unless told to by your doctor. If you miss any doses of anything, you need to tell your doctor when it happens. Just set yourself an alarm on your smartphone when each dose is due and you won't miss any. That's what we have all done and it works very well to keep you on schedule. The Sofosbuvir is now called Sovaldi. I believe it is going to be a once daily oral medication and so far the good news is that it has almost no side effects to speak of. The others here may be able to provide you with additional info and tips.

You shouldn't have any problems, but you can expect some side effects, which are manageable. Just keep in touch with us here and we'll be more than willing to provide you with any help we can. Take care of yourself, eat well and drink lots of water during treatment. Try to drink 2 to 3 liters of water daily, not sugary or caffeinated drinks. Hydration is very important! Use our search function at the top and you'll be able to find answers to many questions you will certainly have as you go forward! Good luck!
