Hi m-over-m, yes I agree with Malcolm that it would be best to follow your doctor`s advice on this.

In the meantime, try not to worry, treatment is stressful enough as it is, and I`ve seen people with low levels of Vitamin D go on to achieve SVR.  There are many factors which determine how well someone responds to treatment.

Just keep going and best of luck!  smile

Hi mindovermatter,

Vitamin D and HepC are contentious issues. The generally accepted normal levels are 40-80 ng/ml. Most Vitamin D is obtained from sun exposure, and most agree that a low level like yours, should be treated with supplements. Obviously you are not getting enough sun, so the standard daily dose to get to acceptable levels is 5,000 i.u./day. Some will say that's too much, and only take 2,000 i.u./day. The only way to be sure is to get the test repeated after a month.

Vitamin D is essential for bone health, and deficiency has been reported to be associated with increased liver fibrosis, and poor response to Interferon treatment. Here's one link.

Many researchers disagree. I'd be guided by your doctor. My levels were normal, and we get plenty of sun here, so I didn't take any supplements. Cheers.

My Vitamin D levels a re very low (10). Normal is above 40. I have pushed my Dr. into giving me a Vitamin D supplement. It is 60000 IU of Vitamin D  per sachet to be taken for 8 weeks. The Dr. had advised me not to take Vitamin D supplement for longer that the period that he has prescribed.

On the other hand, a number of members on Hep C forums (here and elsewhere) have said that Vitamin D levels rise very slowly.

I have also read that low level of Vitamin D in the body corresponds to a low possibility for SVR.

What should I do? Do I continue taking VItamin D, post 8 weeks as well?

Considering that the level of Vitamin D in my body at the time of starting tx was so low, are my chances of SVR low?
