Thanks Tig,

My daughters boyfriend who is a vegan health fanatic told me to mix wheatgrass powder, beet powder and spirulina powder together with some juice. Going to ask my nurse if that mixture is ok first. Then I'll ad some spinach for good measure. I'll let you guys know if there is any affect from it.

Here's some reports on the effects of Iron on HCV. The main article is a 2004 University of WA report with trailing references. It's technical but explains the differences in Iron replacement vs. stored levels and it's impact on health. It's an interesting read.

There are several articles about this online. They will all tell you that iron building regimens are good at reducing anemia, but be sure that you don't already have high blood iron levels. That can be a problem shared by people with liver disease. Check with your doctor first and see what your level is. Taking iron supplements isn't recommended unless told to.

There are several foods that are good at it. The green leafy vegetables, liver, red meat, rice, wheat germ, fortified cereals, nuts like peanuts and almonds, broccoli, sweet potato and Lima/black beans (among others) will help. As for fruits, raisins, prunes, dried figs, apricots, apples, grapes, oranges and even watermelon help.

The doctor can prescribe Procrit (works fairly fast), which is an injectable medication given frequently to boost Hb. Also blood transfusions are often given as a quick and reliable booster. The last thing is a Ribavirin reduction. Some doctors choose that first but it's a very debatable issue. It works, but it's impact on SVR is in question. Best to keep the dose as high as tolerable, but you have to trust your doctor ultimately or get a second opinion if you're concerned. Good luck!

I was told to eat lots of green veggies and vitamin c which helps to absorb it. I am not an expert but it cannot hurt to try.

yes, there is. However, it takes awhile to work and it has it's own list of side effects. Plus, they lower your ribo dose first before they use this (or at least my doctor does), so I'm wanting to increase mine as much as possible through diet so I don't have to decrease the ribo.

I have never had problems with my hemoglobin while I was on treatment but I was under the impression that there is medication your doctor can give you to help raise your hemoglobin level. Have you asked your doctor about this? Does anyone know if this is correct?

Just wondering if anybody has done any research on foods, drinks etc. That can help with hemoglobin levels. Since this is something most of us deal with, would be great to help it along as much as possible with diet.
