It's a great TV spot. I am not at all surprised at the negative reactions. LTChaos, I'm so glad you posted on that Facebook thread. Facebook has a lot of "lurkers," and we influence more people than we realize when we have the courage to counter some of the ignorance found there.

The thing is, people make mistakes in life, especially when they're young. Who is qualified to live in that glass house and throw stones? It really doesn't matter how HCV was acquired; we all know that, but we have to make sure others do--without necessarily revealing ourselves.

I have a very good friend who talks about her HCV+ brother-in-law disparagingly. She thinks HCV can be spread casually and is worried her kids will get it from him just by being around him. She doesn't know about me, and I feel very uncomfortable at times.

Scruffy, I was afraid of that before responding - but to heck with them, if the hens want to cluck, let them.     Maybe the Riba is making me brave, or possibly crazy

LTChaos

That attitude comes from the late 70's early 80's. Back then they knew it wasn't hep b so 8 out of 10 times they called it terminal hep. They didn't know or more over wouldn't admit the blood they were using was infected not to mention operations and even the dentist. It wasn't until much later that pre 1989 blood product became a risk factor. Hep C was the result of dirty tattoo parlors or drug use or so they believed. That sticks with people today. IMO when you responded you tipped your hat but you have to follow your heart to be happy in this life. Good for you.

Best wishes to you

Hi Aprileee , Im orginally from Chgo, left 1/6/86. My exe, who also has Hep C is dying of cancer in eye ,brain and lungs. He is receiving care on the  north side; on  Western ave. My daug is there now. Think he had a stroke last night, Hospice only gives pain meds, and so assessment for need to thicken liquids may not be done.    Not sure if they run same commercials on network TV in all states, your in a different time zone. Anyway , I used to live on Wrightwood not far from Clark street. Hope they are playing the commerical on TV up there.

LT,

Thanks for sharing your story. It's likely we can all come up with one or more examples of similar situations that could both sadden or infuriate us. I've seen the "stigma" surrounding HCV and other illnesses hurt and there is never any good that comes out of it. I think we can all agree that this is finally the beginning of something good. It begins with a step and progresses to a run, one step at a time! Let's keep it moving in the right direction...

I did tell her that I know two people recently who died from Hep C, so she would look like a royal blankety blank if she did have a bad reaction to my post.  I don't think she will

Not that it matters  - but The two people who died were not drug users, one was another 'suburban grandma' who never sought help, and the other was the son of our pastor who was born with hep c.   He was only 26, and died during his third liver transplant.

I agree that the ads should include people from other age groups.  My PA told me that almost all her 'new' Hep c patients are in their 20's & early 30's.  this surprised me, and I hope Gilead recognizes this & puts more of an age variety in future ads!

Dearest LTChaos, my heart goes out to u . I can only salute u for not losing it. It is a shame that people with the ability to do good hobble those who attempt to help others. Wonder if she has a problem with erectile disfunction commercials on saturday mornings. I saw the commercial during The Chew and General Hospital. Ignorance is also a disease.

Good for you LT! I have yet to see this commercial. Ironically though the topic of HepC came up at work the other day amongst myself and some co-workers. The discussion started with us talking about chicken pox, moved to vaccines then someone asked if we all had to get the "Hepatitis vaccines, something like A, B, C or something" was the exact quote. He was obviously talking about the 3 dose HepB vaccine required to go to school but then someone made a snide remark about HepC. Reminded me that my decision to keep my secret for as long as I have is still the right one! However I have days where I want to scream it from the roof tops and remind people how ignorant they are.

There certainly needs to be more education out there and (please no offense to anyone) but these videos that ARE out - need to include younger people. I've only ever seen "baby boomers" on documentaries and such. I know that's the largest population affected but it's not the only population affected.

LT - hopefully she doesn't come back at you too harshly!

My Facebook feed had a complaint on it this morning regarding the TV ads.  A woman I am friends with was not happy her 11 year old saw the ad.  Her comment was an ad like that should be on at 2 AM, not during 'normal' hours.  She didn't want to have to talk about Hep C to her daughter (our daughters are friends btw).

She doesn't know I have it.  I could not help but respond to her, after several people liked & agreed with her (all suburban mom's), I told her it made me sad she felt that way, and explained how a Hep c Dx sends people into hiding because they are treated so poorly.   I explained there was now a cure & we needed to get the word out, even if it made you uncomfortable.  Hopefully I worded it in a way that was non-confrontational, but clear.   It's not what I was thinking in my head - so I am pretty proud I did not come out with some of the words I was thinking!!

She is someone with a lot of contacts in our community, town board member, volunteers for everything & I think has 1300 people on her news feed - so I could not just let her say those things without challenging her!

Hi,

We discussed this earlier this week. I saw it on TV here in Florida and Scruffy mentioned seeing it too. SuziQ posted a link yesterday about an online video on Vimeo.com. It's a campaign by Gilead to get the word out on HCV. I'm sure it's to promote their new DAA, Sovaldi, but that matters little really. I'm excited to see HCV finally hitting prime time TV!

Lets hope it continues to make headlines!

Thanks for telling me, next time I'll put on my glasses and check it out. I usually just listen to the TV while on  the PC , I should have said, " I heard it." Either way, it's about time .

I just saw it myself, but if you look at the lower left corner of the screen at the end of the commercial, the name Gilead appears.

Today for the first time; in North Carolina, I have seen commercials for people with Hep C . Warning of the dangers and severity of the disease, and advising people to get treatment. No drugs or types of treatment mentioned , I have see this commerical twice in the past 2 hours. Something great is coming , looks like Hep c is finally out of the closet.  Michaele
