Hey Angie,

I think you hit it on the head. The reason many of us want to have these VL's tested and retested, is because we're relapsers from a different era in treatment. Back in the not too distant past, the chances of SVR and relapse were quite different. Even the medical community had their doubts and uncertainties. Isn't it nice to be part of the new successes in HCV care? (Answer not required!) biggrin

Yay for being almost done! I started week 9 yesterday. I am very happy to see only 3 more injections in my fridge.
My doctor also said that 12 weeks post treatment is when they consider you cured if you are still undetected. I personally will want to be checked at 6 months and then at a year because I am paranoid and will only fully believe that it's gone if I keep seeing the lab work saying I'm undetected. I think I feel like that because I am a prior relapser but I'm fairly certain that SVR12 is a guarantee to stay that way for most.

Hey LT!  I was just thinking about you the other day, doing the math on your last day compared to when mine is! LOL

Same here on the VL and I was surprised too. My doc said he will test me at 12 weeks post (just labs) and then again at 6 months post (he wants to see me on that visit) and a final one at 1 year post. He said that he will consider me SVR if I'm undetectable at 12 weeks post as well but wants to do the 6 months post just in case. He said the 1 year post is more for me than for him due to the slim percentage of relapse if und at 12 weeks post and 6 months post. I will not get ANY labs done until 12 weeks post, I haven't had labs since middle of week 8. My HGB was steady throughout, 11.9 at 8 weeks so he said he wasn't concerned, even if it dropped a full point in the last 4 weeks (very unlikely) that I would be fine. He said I could call if I started to feel like garbage but I don't feel any different than I have so I guess it's all good.

So excited for you!!!I'm down to 13 days!

Hi LT,

Congrats on reaching the finish line!!! Yeah!!  Since you're the first to finish at your doctor's practice, you tell them I said they owe you a cruise, lol! There simply have to be benefits for being #1! Good job, I know you're so happy to be nearing the end.

The EOT testing protocol has changed. I still see many patients on the older SOC's having the 12, 24 and 48 week viral load tests, but the new data and articles I've read indicate SVR 12 as the standard now, especially with Sovaldi based therapies. The rates of relapse after a SVR 12 is 1% or less. There will continue to be differing opinions on the subject but the overwhelming evidence so far supports that. The new treatments are proving very successful and with a 1% or less relapse rate, some feel the costs involved in these VL tests are prohibitive and unnecessary. Most doctors will perform them if asked, but be sure your insurance carrier pre-approves it. My lab charges $1500.00 for the quantified test, so it's worth looking into. Good luck and keep us informed!

Well, I am coming to the end of my 12 weeks on Sovaldi & Ribavirin.  Sunday will be my final day.  At the Dr today, they told me I will be the first person to complete the treatment in their practice.  There was one ahead of me, but they ended up dropping interferon & now have to do 24 weeks.   Not sure what GT they were.

One thing they mentioned today that surprised me was that I am only going to be tested at 12 weeks post treatment.  If I am undetectable, they consider that to be SVR.    This seems to be much different than everyone else's experience.  They are taking the recommendation from Gilead, and they are saying there is no need for any further testing after the 12 week test.

I will have a VL & Liver function test on Monday, and will have results in about a week.
