Hi Duddy,
I am also from Canada, (left coast) half way through treatment. I just got back from a dive trip to Hawaii where I spent 5 days on the boat. I used lots of sun screen and the rash I had on my arms was there before the trip so my Dr prescribed cortisone cream which has helped.
I did get a bad burn on my head earlier in my treatment from overcast skies but have been way more careful about covering up now.

Thanks for mentioning this and I will be sure to keep well protected through the second 6 weeks of treatment.

I am wondering about your insurance coverage. My Dr was prepared to put me on the old 48 wk treatment until he looked in coverage from Sun Life. I am employed by the Canadian Govmt and we have pretty good coverage. Who is your insurance through.

I was UND at week four and I am glad I insisted on getting this combo of amazing drugs.

I'm on the S/O combo with the same issue of sun sensitivity as others. I ride motorcycles and also have issues with the wind at times. I've tried to limit my riding during the peck sun hours and also use a lotion before applying sunscreen that's a spf 85. Seems to work for me. also wear a hat, I shave my head so it's easy to apply the screen but a part line on your scalp with fry like bacon. Best of luck, Kurt

Good to hear you`re on your last week of treatment now, Duddy, and I hope you have a swift recovery from these side effects after you`ve finished all your pills.  I should still continue to take precautions with sun exposure for a while to let yourself recover and your body get back to normal.

Interesting comment regarding the situation in Canada regarding the cost of these medicines, and from what our American members have been saying it seems to be a common problem and there have been many discussions here on the subject.  This drug combo is still an `off label` treatment and the drugs are extremely costly, and we all hope that the situation will improve at some point in the not too distant future.

Best of luck with your EOT results and SVR, and please feel welcome to keep in touch and let us know how things progress for you. ~ Jill smile

I'm in my final week. Thanks for your wishes. I extend them to everyone here. One thing I want to note is that the high cost of the drugs compromises the relationship between the pharmacist, the insurer, and the patient here in Canada.

duddy,

i really feel for you for i im 5 mo. off incevik & have exact same trouble.

to begin w/ plan your days doing errands when it's cloudy & rainy. do buy dermo recommended sun screen & lather it on as suggested. buy sun shades for car & turn on ac prior to entering it, wear uv sun visor protectors & google the asian ones, always cover whole body w/ cotton clothing, buy aloe vera  gel & best of luck!!!!!

wondering if you had this problem prior to treatment? i did & do notice a moderate improvement being UND.  also i have thal minor & take bp meds that have photosensitivity as a sx. you better believe i'll call my primary dr. for a different rx!!!!!

finally, make sure you have the required amt. of potassium in your body at all times.

wishing you a stress free evening.... and consider becoming a vampire/goth ....ha-ha......

Hi Duddy, welcome to the forum!

We have several members who are doing the same treatment combo of Sofosbuvir (Sovaldi) and Galexos (Simeprevir, marketed as `Olysio` in the U.S. and `Galexos` in Canada), and some of them have also posted that they`ve developed problems with sun sensitivity, you`re not alone.  As you`re nearing the end of your treatment I expect you`re taking all reasonable precautions now to limit your exposure to sunlight.

How many weeks do you have left to do now?

Wishing you all the best with the rest of your treatment, I expect other people will also chime in soon to greet you.

Hi David,

Welcome to the forum! You must be from Canada, because Galexo is the name given to Olysio, north of the US border. The combo you're on. Sovaldi (Sofosbuvir) and Galexo (Simeprevir/Olysio) is an extremely effective treatment. However, one of the well known side effects of Galexo is sun sensitivity. It seems to affect people a little differently, some have bad experiences with that issue and others are hardly affected. The best methods of dealing with it is to avoid sun exposure when possible and to use a quality SPF 15 or better sun screen product. Even though the use of sun screen products helps to reduce the UVA/UVB exposure, and burns, the actual sun exposure can still cause problems, like rashes. Try to keep covered as best as possible, long sleeves, long pants, hats etc., but most of all, keep in mind that your eyes must also be protected. Use quality eye protection when outside! As soon as you're finished with treatment, these types of side effects generally will end quickly. But you should always be cautious during and following treatment with any medication that causes these types of side effects. Good luck and please if you're interested, introduce yourself on our New Members section. We'd love to hear more about you!
