Thank you both for explaining it to me! Helps!

Cheers, Isiscat, you're on my wavelength.

After SVR, it is possible there is still replication. If we stay 'Undetected', it means our immune system has learned to cope with the small amount of virus.

Sorry, Omna. 'Extra-hepatic manifestations' means the joint and muscle problems, diabetes, endocrine disorders (particularly thyroid problems), headaches etc. that can all be part of the symptoms of HepC.

Hi Omna:

He is saying the virus can enter just about any tissue in the body.  Whether it can also replicate in places other than the liver is not known with medical certainty but it probably can.

"Extra-hepatic clinical manifestations" means health problems and symptoms other than liver damage.  That the virus can travel to tissues other than the liver is the reason the virus causes other health problems in addition to liver disease.

Then he said "Cheers."  That means "Good wishes."  lol

He didn't say this but my understanding is that it will not replicate in the liver or any other tissue to a detectable degree IF treatment is successful because treatment stops the replication process.   There is only a slight (1-2% chance) that replication would occur once you reach SVR.

That's my interpretation and understanding.  Please feel free to correct me if I am mistaken, Mallani.

Hey Mallani;

You're answer was interesting but way over my head. Can you please explain in layman terms? Are you saying that we can relapse years later if the HCV is hiding in other cells? Or if undetected for three - six months, is there no way there's any remnant of the virus?

What do you mean by, "explains the extra-hepatic clinical manifestations of HepC."?

Many many thanks!

Hi Omnam..,

Interesting question. HCV has been found in virtually every body tissue. It obviously can enter 'garbage-bin type' cells like macrophages, dendrocytes, Kupffer cells, blood monocytes and T-cells. Whether it can replicate in these tissues remains controversial. To replicate, the viral protease must break down the host cell cytoplasm to produce the 'building blocks' for a new virus. The general impression is that it can. As we still can't culture the virus, this remains theoretical. The ability to enter and probably damage tissues other than liver, explains the extra-hepatic clinical manifestations of HepC. Cheers.

Just curious? I've heard it can be in our brains, organs and that Solvaldi first rids it in our bloodstream that's why we come up undetected.

But I'm wondering if the virus attaches anywhere else other than the liver for viral replication? I thought it solely used Liver cells so I'm confused at how it could possibly be anywhere else in the body?

Thanks. I wish there was a video to watch on this. :p

thank you. :)
