Thank you!  I wondered about the 'magic mouthwash' I was hearing about too.  He was prescribed a steroid cream which doesn't really seem to do much.  We head back to U of M in four weeks for our first viral load...if the sores are still there, I will ask for the mouthwash.   Our liver doc seemed to think that if he can rid himself of the virus, that this lichen planus will also go (in fact, it was part of the argument to try the sovaldi-olysio combo for the authorization).  So, our fingers are crossed.

But in the meantime you have given me some options that he can try.

Thanks!

Sandy

Hi Sandy,

If I hadn't seen the photo and explanation you provided, I would've bet my last dollar, just from the symptoms, that your husband was suffering from Thrush. Those two conditions are so similar I'm amazed. Two weeks after I started treatment, I started exhibiting all of the same symptoms. I thought I had strep throat and was in so much pain, I was just miserable. It wasn't until one of our members here, Kellie, rescued me by first telling me what she thought my problem was and some over the counter things I could do to make it through the weekend. He should avoid all spices, keep his diet as bland as possible, gargle/swish several times a day with a salt water rinse, keep it refrigerated , because the coldness helps provide some comfort. 1/4 tsp. of table salt in 8 ounces of water is adequate.  Since you already have a diagnosis, the ideas I've got for my problem won't apply but there is one prescription they gave me that might help his discomfort. That's a medication known as "Magic Mouthwash". Since Thrush is a fungal infection, the one ingredient in the mouthwash, "Nystatin" won't be of benefit, but since it's made to order by the pharmacist, that could be omitted. Anyway, it contains a viscous form of lidocaine, which will numb up his sore and raw tissue. It also contains number of ingredients that can be added or omitted and made into a custom mouthwash based on symptoms. The link I'm providing has a few different suggestions on it. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask and I'll do my best to help you find an answer. I know how awful he feels. Please give him my best and do take care of yourself too. Good luck!

Hi All

My husband recently was diagnosed with this, and told that it is not uncommon for someone with Hep C virus.  It is worse when on medications, but becoming such a pain (literally).  Very painful to eat any crunchy or spicy (two favorite foods).  Anyone else have this?  Anyone found anything to help?

As always your insight is appreciated.

Sandy
