Hi Dee Dee. That is interesting. Do you have a link to the source? I'm curious about the finer details such as how many people fell into that category and how many overall were in those studies. Are they referring to Phase 3 trials?

Alcohol Use

Alcohol blunts immune responses to hepatitis C, which may be why heavy drinkers generally have higher hepatitis C viral loads than non-drinkers. Regular alcohol intake is known to increase the rate and severity of liver damage in people with hepatitis C; it also increases the risk for liver cancer. Physicians advise those with hep C to completely abstain from alcohol.

While the clinical trials for Sovaldi excluded anyone who was currently abusing alcohol, they did not reject anyone with a history of doing so or who currently consumed (as opposed to abused) alcohol. The cure rates were no different for the 5 percent to 10 percent or participants who reported either a history of alcohol abuse or current use than for those who did not report such alcohol use.

Research has linked both lifetime and recent alcohol use to poorer HCV treatment outcomes, although these studies used less effective treatment regimens than the current standard of care, and adherence was not measured. Another study, again conducted with an outdated treatment protocol, suggests that poor treatment adherence, not actual alcohol intake, may have been responsible for lowering cure rates. In the meantime, many doctors will not treat drinkers until they are willing to enter treatment for substance use or until they have been abstinent for six months.

On the other hand, some doctors have reported that starting HCV treatment leads to other healthy behaviors, such as cutting down or eliminating alcohol intake. It's important to find a doctor you are comfortable working with and who can help you make the best decisions for your health.
