Tig I agree with you. There may be something to the cumulative affect.  I can say positively the sun affected me while on tx.  I wasn't taking RIBA, just S&O.  My arm formed a rash that took weeks to get rid of.  It' was a pain in the butt and looked ugly.  I found that covering with duo-derm bandages helped. They are pricey but you can get them on Amazon for a better price.  I've never really had a problem with the sun before.  Everyone is different, but until you're sure you won't affected, do yourself, a favor, use sunscreen and keep covered.  After my rash started I wore a hat and long sleeve UPF shirts.  Got in the sun today for the first time since eot with no shirt to see if it will still impact me.  Time will tell.

When I hear people mention they've had problems with a rash or sun burn while on one of the protease inhibitors, I like to remind them that even though you're doing your best to limit your sun exposure, it's important to know that even though you're using a strong SPF sun screen lotion, there's something else to remember. Even though you're using the SPF lotion, and that certainly helps prevent burns (sometimes), it's important to remember that exposure to the sun, at all, can be problematic. Exposure, even while protected, with lotions or clothing doesn't eliminate the overall exposure. Just being in the sun can cause rashes and even though it's anecdotal, I'm beginning to wonder if there isn't a cumulative affect. When I went out in the sun it seemed to get more and more aggravated, regardless of the protection I used. So keep that in mind!

So what you're saying is just like over exposure when you are young can cause problems down the road, mild exposure when on treatment can also come back to bite you later?

I take 1400mg/day

I have had mild sunburn at times never usually bothered by sun but using spf 40 now. I have had a minor rash on my lower arms and wrists. Controlled with cortisone, my HGB is low and 120 down from 160 pre treatment and I noticed it while bike riding last night I was winded easily.

All in all it's all worth it. My LFT numbers have gone from the 100s to the teens since I started treatment. I still feel better than I can remember in years.

Hey Huey,

Your comment caught my attention. I'm not aware of genotype specific side effects. Can you expand on that subject and direct me to some information on it? I'd appreciate it! Thanks...

Tig

The side effects are determined by more than just the medications you are taking.  The Geno Type of the virus you have itself can give you side effects.  One would look at the meds they are taking, "Different ones for different geno types" to find what kind of side effects to expect.biggrin

Hello Randy,

Unfortunately Riba tends to let you know it's "in the building" in one form or another. Some will experience harsh and unpleasant SFX and some will be milder in nature. The effect Riba is best known for is anemia, agitation and various skin conditions, namely a rash and itching.  While the SFX are unpleasant, they are manageable and doable. Avoid exposure to the sun because it does cause sun sensitivity in many people. Use an appropriate SPF lotion +15 or higher and cover up. I like to remind people, especially this time of the year to protect your eyes with  good quality UV blocking sunglasses. If you plan for the possibilities, the actual events will be easily controlled. We're here to provide tips and answers when and if you need them. Just let us know. Good luck!
