I lived on bananas during treatment! I contacted my specialty pharmacist about the need for food and as you've been told before, some drugs require it, some do not. The previous medication so many were on, Incivek, required the taker to consume a minimum of 20 grams of fat with each dose. I took Victrelis and there wasn't the same need for fat intake, but the pharmacist still recommended food of some type with it. The purpose of food taken with medication provides protection for the stomach in some instances, because some drugs are upsetting and hard on the gastric lining. But often the reason it's recommended is that food, particularly fat, improves the bio-availability of the drug (absorption into the blood stream/body). I've read on many occasions, that grapefruit, or citrus in general can have negative effects of drug absorption. So as a personal rule, I don't take any medication with citrus or citrus juices. Whether it's because it's highly acidic or not, I'm not sure. As I mentioned, I kept bananas in the house the entire time I was on treatment and I also had plenty of yogurt. Both were easy to keep in the house and very easy to consume with the medication if nothing else was prepared. Try to maintain a healthy diet and eat a little bit of something with each dose of medication and everything will be fine.

I take my morning meds with a banana.  it is quick and tailorable in the morning and is enough it seems to keep away any liver pain.

Hi Sandy:

Here is what the FDA, who gets their info from the drug manufacturer, has to say about that:

"The recommended dose of OLYSIO is one capsule of 150 mg taken orally once daily with food. The type of food does not affect exposure to simeprevir."

I think this requirement is more to prevent nausea but perhaps a little to help with absorption; certainly nothing like the Incivek fat requirement.  Maybe a bit of yogurt or milk or he could even wait an hour to take the med with his breakfast.

I'm sure you will get lots of feedback from people who are actually on the meds.  I'm so glad your husband was able to get on these meds and I hope all is going well for the both of you.  smile

Hi All

I know that my husband should eat food when taking the medications.  But he usually is not hungry in the morning, and waits an hour or so.  Should this be taken with food to help with absorption (like the high fat diet with Incivek) or is this to reduce upset stomach?

Also, are there other restrictions (grapefruit for example).

We are two weeks in, but I want to make sure this is going as perfect as possible.  Any helps is appreciated.

Sandy
