When having high ammonia levels, protein intake from meat sources should be greatly reduced.  Surprised your doc didn't discuss this. Also there is another med Xifaxin (Rifaximin) That will bring down ammonia levels quickly without some of side effects you describe.   Good luck with your treatment.

Hi,, I was a geno 3a  , taking Sovaldi and Riba, I had Lactose issues at the start of treatment, Now that the virus is gone lactose is not a problem. When you first start this treatment you are Killing a lot of virus.  I went from 5.8 mill to  und in 3.8 weeks.  The virus itself can cause problems as it dies.  Your VL is basicly low so your experience should not be as bad as mine with a High VL/  non the less you go through a roller coaster ride of side effects. Ammonia one of them.  Just give this some time, you can expect two or three weeks of this and it will change.

Hi Eric,

I'm a bit confused. You say you have 'Stage 1 liver scarring' but have hepatic encephalopathy?? You must be cirrhotic, and I can't understand how you can teach skateboarding and perform as a live musician at night. Cheers.

Hi Eric,

Congrats on achieving your first undetectable test result! That's excellent news and I'm sure it's a sign of better things to come! As far as your Lactulose issues, it's a difficult problem for some to manage and I can't imagine having to deal with the "wet" gas... Ugggh......!! I did some google searches on lactulose and high ammonia. There are some suggestions that mention diet and supplementation but I don't recommend any supplements while you're on treatment. I would have to rely on my physician for recommendations on that. You don't want to start experimenting with various home remedies and goof up your test results. I know there are some supplements that will affect the test results from the different HCV protocols and that's the last thing you want to have affect your test results. I would check with your hepatologist and perhaps a Naturopath/Dietician to see if there's a diet plan you could follow that will help reduce your ammonia levels. Good luck!

Got my first labs back 2 weeks ago, virus undetectable, ammonia levels high(55), all other blood work good.  Got labs back today, same results.  I was diagnosed genome 2a, 1,600,000 viral load.  I am on 400mg sovaldi and 1200mg ribavirin per day.  I feel great, no rash or mouth sores or insomnia or bruising, a bit fatigued and sometimes "foggy" but over all I feel very blessed with my treatment.  I am very active in the mornings teaching skateboarding 6 days a week and am a performing musician at night.  Here is my question for anybody out there who might know: Did anybody take Lactulose to lower their encephalopathy?  At first I tried 30ml 3x a day and it was horrible (constant intestinal evacuation and wet gas), then I dropped it to 15ml 3x a day same story, less violent, still very uncomfortable.  Then my Dr. suggested 10ml once a day and all negative side effects subsided but no decrease in ammonia levels.  Now the doc wants me to go back up to 15ml 3x a day, I said that amount was violent to me so we agreed on 15ml 2x a day and maybe work up.  Can someone talk me off this ledge.  Are there things I should avoid eating, drinking?  Are there things I should be eating or drinking?  Is there any other med I can suggest to my Dr. that is not a treatment for constipation?confuse
