Pizza,

Sovaldi is the Sofosbuvir you are taking is considered a Direct Acting Agent (DAA). Olysio (Simeprevir) is a Protease Inhibitor that can be used for folks like us- with Genotype 1.  It's typically a 12 week treatment and is considered to be a really effective option (88-92%) but it's not FDA approved. The makers of Olysio (Janssen) recently applied for an additional clinical trial to get this combo FDA approved.

I just started this combo and began Week 2 yesterday.  The side effects haven't been bad but the first two days were a little rough.  Now, I can hardly tell I'm taking it.

There is a better option coming in October of this year and it will be FDA approved.  The success rates on the next to come combo for Genotype 1 patients (Sovaldi/Ledipasvir) is showing promising results with a 98-100% success rates.

Any tx with Sovaldi is looking to be promising to achieve SVR.  And now I just saw Tig posted on this subject but what the heck, I'll post this anyway.  Tig is a wealth of knowledge and knows much more about this than I do.  He can go greatly in depth on this subject if you want?  Hope this helps

Sovaldi and Olysio is still considered an "off label" treatment. They are undergoing continuing studies to get them approved but with the new drug Ledispavir soon to be approved (Oct.10, tentatively) I believe we'll hear less and less about S/O. However, if you can get approved for the S/O combo, the results are very promising and very high rates of SVR. It's also an attractive option for people that have problems with treatment that includes Peg Interferon, for a number of reasons. Some doctors are requesting the S/O combo and getting it approved, regardless of previous consideration for Interferon or not. Either protocol, S/O or S/P/R are very effective treatments, with S/O having far fewer negative side effects by far. Next year with the new S/L combo, we're likely going to see less use of S/O however, even with the completion of the current studies underway, imo anyway.

Im not sure that is the case, I took Interferon and Riba and was able to cope with the side effects. My Dr recommended this treatment over that with interferon because it is so effective. (I had told him I was willing to put up with whatever had the best chances)

I could be wrong but the O/S Tx hasn't been fully approved yet so Docs are still going with the Interferon/Rib/Solvaldi as it as just as effective.

Im new here and by no means a medical professional =D Just what ive gleaned here and there.

Oh I see. The Olysio & Sovaldi is for people that can't tolerate the Ribavarin and Interferon?

Wow...I'm a newbie and don't have the wealth of knowledge that flows here.  There are very kind people here and lots of support.

im on S/O....in my 6th week....I was undetectable at 4 weeks.....I am on a 12 week program,

I can't take the interferon or ribo,,,,,had a very bad reaction,...

I don't know Much...but do believe in asking and looking for a second opinion.  It's your life, it's your choice......I do know sovaldi is curing people,  I know I will be cured.  Good luck.

i am/was (lol) 1a with a viral load of 1,300,000.  I do not have cirrhosis.  My blood work is perfect......

How does my treatment differ from Olysio & Sovaldi? Can somebody explain the difference in treatment?

  • Sofosbuvir (one pill a day)
  • Ribavirin (5 pills a day starting dose)
  • interferon (injection)

Thank you!
