Hi Josh:

I'm sure your doc would have no problem with you having a fibroscan to measure your fibrosis.  Unfortunately, there are no medical facilities in Oregon that have the fibroscan machine yet, as far as I know.  Virginia Mason in Seattle has one.  That is about 300 miles from where you are and it is the closest.  The cost is $300. out of pocket.

Biopsy is fine too.  The truth is both biopsy and fibroscan have error margins.  They are diagnostic tools but neither is perfect.  The big difference is that biopsy is invasive (meaning they have to surgically remove pieces of your liver) and fibroscan is not invasive.  While it is extremely rare you do risk injury from biopsy.  The only way you could be injured by a fibroscan is if you tripped over the machine's electric cord and bumped your head.  :)

I would like to add something to this.  My sister is the training nurse for a Texas state hospital in Kerville Texas .  When I ask her about a biopsy she said, "You don't won't a biopsy little brother, People can bleed to death from a biopsy!" She is an old school nurse " M.A.S.H. nurse from Korean war. Now retired and things have gotten a lot better since the days she is referring too. But they are still dangerous.

If your Doctor does not use a fibo-scan that is because the insurance won't pay for it.  So the doctors just say that test is no good , we use this one, And the doc is right because it does you no good if you can't pay for it.  But elsewhere in the world it is being paid for and used.  My understanding is the insurance don't have a medical code for it so they can't use it. No way to bill for it. Here in the USA that is.  I am getting a biopsy the 28th but that is because I am getting my gallbladder out and they are going to be there anyway so might as well.  As for the score, the Doctors will use what ever info they can get to produce results.  How they score it is not important.

Hi Josh,

While the fibroscan can be a beneficial test during treatment, I believe it can have some inaccuracies. I feel a biopsy is still more accurate as we have previously discussed. The FS has been used as a primary diagnostic tool for fibrosis, but it will depend on things like degree of fibrosis, and your BMI. I would have a biopsy to be sure, it's a fairly easy process and accurate, IMO... Good luck.

 Metavir and Ishak

Im half tempted to call my Gastro office or Gastro doctor lady and say ... do you guys have access to a fibroscan ?

from what im readin from you gurus / oracles you say the fibro is better then a biopsy or<----- can they be translated like Farenheight to celcius .....

as you say  idk if they have access to the fibro scanning system ... is a fibro a primary or secondary test ? seems they push the biopsy as a primary test .......

I learn sumthing everyday i come here ....  have a good night :)
