I dont have a report for my liver, I just took those numbers off of the blood work they did along with the CBC. I see my GI in two weeks, I'm assuming I will get a more in depth report then.

Hi Kim,

AST and ALT are liver enzymes. When a liver cell (hepatocyte) is damaged, these enzymes are released into the blood. The values vary between Labs, but the normal range is about 10- 40 i.u./ml, so yours are normal.

As liver cells are constantly being regenerated, the blood values go up and down. The time of day, when you last ate and a host of drugs can also cause mild variations. HepC causes damage to liver cells, so these enzymes are often raised in chronic HepC, and the ALT is the most liver-specific.

These levels form some of the LFT's that tell part of the story in HepC.

Welcome Kim:

Your blood work report should show the normal range for your ALT and AST.  If your blood values are high or low most labs will indicate that by writing H or L next to the number.  Long story short the ALT and AST show a little bit about what is going on with your liver.  It is common for people who have hepc to have elevated ALT/AST values.

If you want to post your report we can help you interpret it.

Hi,, I can help you with this,
My name is Huey,, I have had this since I was 12 as-well but I am now 52. 30 to 35 years is typical for this to show up in labs and symptoms show up and you seek treatment. This was shown to be true by some German nurse's who got the virus way way back and they have been watching them ever since. What this means to you is you found out early.. This is a + for you.
What your AST and ALT's are is liver enzymes , When the liver needs antibodys your ALT and AST go up. Now about the levels , you see each person is given a Body Mass, and that is used to determine the range that is normal , This is what mine looks like. The  green lines represent the range Hi and low, solid and dash

Hi everyone.... my name is Kim and I've been living with Hep C since I was 12 years old, I'm 25 now. I recently had some bloodwork done and have results from my AST and ALT and are not sure what they mean. Two years ago in 2012 my AST was 16 IU/L.. My bloodwork from yesterday shows my AST as 28 IU/L. My ALT in 2012 was 15 IU/L and yesterday it came in as 35 IU/L.

Does anyone know what these numbers mean? Is it normal for them to climb like that? I just feel like I don't even know what I'm reading. :(
