I don't walk around with it in my purse. That's good to know on the car. I always take my gun with on my kayak too, you never know if you are going to run into a poisonous snake or something that needs shot. I will remember to tell a cop that if I am ever stopped when I have my gun in the car. One of the main reasons I picked out the small automatic was I thought it would make a good small purse gun, and I wanted something light.

I will remember that about depression. I am so sorry to hear about your family members who've passed, especially your son! We never expect to have to bury one of our children. That must be the worst thing ever. I lost my Dad at 16, but I still have my Mom.

Did they tell you to pitch your toothbrush, razor, and clippers on day one? I asked if that was so we didn't re-infect ourselves, and she said yes. All I could think of was an episode of Married with Children where Kelli gets sick and makes her dad fix her toast, so she didn't get her own germs!  biggrin

It's good to have someone you can talk to about treatment for sure.  The only ones who even know I have this disease in real life are my sons and I only told them so they could get tested to make sure I hadn't passed HCV onto them while carrying them.

No it is not illegal to carry it in your car.  It can even be concealed in a glove box, under your seat or in a console.  Your car is considered an extention of your home.  What you can't do is put it in your purse, concealed, and go walking around with it.  Something very important to keep in mind tho is if you are stopped for any reason, keep your hands on the wheel in sight and inform the Officer that it is in the car and where it is.  Once you get your concealed carry you do the same thing with your hands.  When the Officer runs your license it will pop up that you have concealed carry.  Best to tell them in advance so they don't get nervous on you.  The concealed carry class is one of the best things you could ever do for yourself.  I have been around guns all my life and learned a ton of things I did not know.

Something to keep in mind.  Depression is one of the side effects of Riba and our study in general.  I have already told my hubby if I get stupid to lock up All (I have a few)my guns.  I haven't had much yet but it is getting that time of year for me because of a couple hard dates.  My Mom passed on Nov 18, 2011, my step-Dad on Dec 5, 2011 and my Son on Dec 5, 1992.  I have a month there that I usually get a little down so will be really careful then.

I had the bitchies right away and didn't like myself much.  After about two weeks it either got better or I controlled it better.  I still get irritated easy but can laugh at myself now.  Not discounting this treatment, but after scouring this forum we will have it easy no matter what our side effects are.  Most of them have been though hell and back.  I also take 2 in am and 3 at pm.  I have decided they are ugly little pills and tell them so regularly.

I was surprised on what they gave me also.  But wait till you go for your 4 week blood draw.  Then they give you 8 weeks and do not see you again until you finish week 12.  Scared me silly at first, but oh well.  Less times to run to the clinic.  I told my study nurse "I guess this means I get well by myself."  She let me know I could call if I have trouble and they would get me right in.

I have been absolutely thrilled that you were starting this.  I felt a bit lonely and especially because I had no idea what to expect.  Now we both have someone to bounce off of and know we aren't nuts.  Well I guess I shouldn't go quite that far because a lot of folks lovingly tell me all the time "you've lost it girl."  hehe

Hi lilbit, I don't have my concealed carry license yet, but plan to get it asap. Until then, hopefully it isn't against the law to have the gun in the car with me. I definitely believe an armed society is a polite society. My whole family does the gun thing. My oldest is in the military, and he bought a Russian assault rifle. My nephew likes to come to my house and shoot pistols. I am in a somewhat rural area, and we are planning to set up a small shooting range in my back yard next spring. I have a .380 Sig Sauer Rainbow, it's pretty. The boys call it my pea shooter.

I sure wasn't crazy about the Ribavirin, I have a short enough fuse on my temper now. I will just have to watch it closer I guess. My 18 year old son still lives at home and I warned him I may be even grouchier. God know what the other effects will be from it, but I want my best chance of getting cured so I am sure I can deal with whatever for 3 months. They were telling meI take 2 Ribavirin in the am, and 3 in the pm.

That's a cool tip on opening the pills, thank you so much! My nurse probably didn't know the trick to them. I was surprised they gave me 4 weeks of pills at once.

I am sure glad there is someone on it with me here!

I am Sooooo glad you made it home.  Your right, it sounds like St. Louis is crazy and not to safe.  Was glad to hear you had your 380 with you.  I was going to suggest it but didn't know if you were gun friendly or not.  I am a retired Probation/Parole Officer and have a few folks that aren't to crazy about me out there.  I have concealed carry and take mine whenever I travel.  Never have had to take it out, but just peace of mind.

If your drugs came in the cards that are by week with am and pm separated they should have a black arrow looking thing on the left.  Poke that down with your thumb then pull the strip on the other side. Then you can just push the pills out.  Until you get used to it they can fly anywhere.  hehehe

I have heard that these drugs are up for approval in December.  So yes, we were very lucky to get on board ahead of that.  They apparently are serious about sending someone to you because even the AbbVie nurse will tell you they will contract someone to come to you if need be.

I love how they minimize the effect of the Ribavirin.  My provider actually told me that I probably would not see anything until at least the 12th week.  There is a reason everyone is trying to get away from it.  So far I am good, nothing I can't handle.  But really think they should be a little more upfront about it.

Welcome aboard.  I will be with you for the ride.  Soldier on.

That's sweet of you to think of me, lilbit! smile  It rained 1/2 the way down there, but everything went fine.  I got there about an hour early, but I had taken a foam mattress, pillow, and blanket for the trip, and I decided to lay down the my little SUV for a bit.    I had my .380 with me in the console for my own peace of mind.  St Louis has been even crazier than normal with all hoopla going on with the cops and the black community.  What a sorry mess.

They took like 6 tubes of blood.  Then they gave me a breakfast bar and coffee.  I see what you mean about getting the pills out!  My nurse didn't show me any tricks, she just handled me some crappy scissors but I managed to score the back paper with the scissors and pull the tab off.    They gave me a nice binder with sections marked for lab work, etc... and a blue tote to carry it with.  So far, no side effects at all.

I guess my viral load went up a bit to 1,151,923 and my ANC and WBC are pretty low.  Probably why it seems like I get tired quicker.  I thought it was getting older, which probably plays it's role.  biggrin  They said I would probably get a slight rash with the ribavirin, but to take Benadryl and use hydrocortisone cream if I did, and gave me an after hours emergency number.

I overheard one of the nurses tell someone (before they realized I was there yet) that the St Louis study was costing a quarter of a million for Abbvie to run.  They also said the drugs would be on the market before the study was done, but that it was a good thing for the patients.  Heck yeah, it's good for us.  The nurse I was dealing with clammed up when I asked, so I don't know how true it was. They were ok with me changing the date of my future labs to Mondays, so I don't have to go back til the 27th, and it's in the afternoon finally.  Thank God, I got maybe 2 hours of sleep last night. yawn

They also told me if ever for some reason I just absolutely can't come in, let them know and they would send someone to me.  That's cool to have as an emergency option.

I was just grateful to get into a trial finally before everything is already FDA approved.  Time to go try to crash. smile Sometimes it's hard when so much is going on, even when you are dog-tired!

You go girl.  I will be thinking about you all day.  Let me know how everything goes.  Be careful in St. Louis.  By the way they will give you something little to eat after your blood draw so you can take your first dose.  lol watch close how they open the package.  I didn't because I was nervous and had an awful time the first time I did it myself.  Yea new soldier in the fight.

Oh, I'm excited too lilbit. It's a huge thing for me. I am getting ready to scarf a big dinner and take some vitamins so I can get some nutrition in before I have to make that trip. At least we can drink water. Hopefully I will get a short nap in too.

Hi LC.

In answer to your question, yes the nurse calls every week.  They mainly want to know how you are doing and if you have any side effects.  You can ask all the questions you want and they are more than willing to answer what they can.  At least mine if she doesn't know something she will find out and let me know.  Then they either email or call your study provider if they think there is anything they need to know.  I had a girl named Audrey for the first 4 weeks and she got transferred to another position.  Just talked to my new one, Twila, and what a joy she is.

I have found out that, at least with my provider, they can adjust the time but not the day.  I can see on the first one because the doctor has to examine you again for the start of trial.  After that the only reason you should have to see the doc is if your meds need adjusted or something.  The day is important because the blood draws are on a strict schedule.

The biggest lesson I have learned so far is keeping a positive, excited attitude.  I love the idea of dragon slaying.  I have always liked a good fight and its on.  hehe

Lilbit, I can't imagine how hard it was to watch your husband go through interferon treatment twice. I was diagnosed the summer of 2012, they were setting me up for peg interferon treatment. Then fortunately I found this place and started reading what interferon treatment was doing to the members, and after some research, I quickly decided to wait on better meds.

It's been a long wait, and I can't wait to start tomorrow. I have to be there at 7:30, it's about a 3 hour drive and I have to work til 10:30 tonight, so I am considering sleeping in the car, but it is downtown St Louis so... maybe not...

I think they can be more flexible with the schedule after this visit, we have to catch the doc. Are the nurses from Abbvie calling you at home? My study nurse mentioned that.

Well, when you take these somewhat experimental drugs, watching the long term results is always a good thing right? Besides, I figure they did me a real solid favor here. Maybe I can combine some future long term visits with trips to Six Flags since I usually go there anyway.

Hi LC,  Mine is exactly same schedule and is Topaz II like you.  I also would like to go through the entire 260 if for nothing more than the free blood work.  heheh What can you get for free these days.  I have been so pleased with the lack of hard side effects so far.  I watched my husband go through treatment twice and it has literally destroyed his health.  When he relapsed after the second one I decided that I just never would get treated.  BUT after I retired I made a list of chores that I wanted to complete before I died and realized I needed to live to be about 115 to get them all done.  So I started this to try and get more time.

And by the way I am totally excited to have someone else on this treatment and posting.

Hi lilbit, I am sure glad to hear it's going well for you!  I haven't actually started drugs yet, I think they are going to start me tomorrow.  I believe she thought I would be getting the ribavirin too.  I think it may have had to do with the genotype I am, and that 1a is the hardest to treat from what I was told by the nurse.

Mine is says Topaz II to evaluate long-term outcomes.  The schedule I have is to go in on Day 1, Week 2, Week 4, then Week 12, and a Week 24 (for those taking it that long), then a Post Dosing at 4 Weeks After, 12, 24, 52, 104, 156, 208, 260.  They said we could opt out if we wanted at any point but that it was free blood-work, and I would kind of like to see it through if at all possible.

I was the in the same situation with the co-pays on insurance, and it felt like manna from heaven when they finally called.  I was trying to get into one in Ohio 6 hours away, since I had been talking to St Louis for well over a year to no avail.

Thanks ICAT and Tig!  I hadn't been on this forum for a long time and I had forgotten how positive this place was. smile

Awesome LC. I am so excited for you on getting in to this program. I am almost done with week 5 and so far everything is going well. Have not got my results back for week 4 blood draw but I am expecting them to be just fine. Are you doing the Riba also or did you get just the study drugs? They are doing it both ways here but I got assigned the Riba. So far the hardest thing for me has been trying to get those silly pills out of the packaging. I get them started then they shoot across the room. I will be interested in hearing how they run your trial. I went in on week two and four and now I don't go back for 7 weeks almost the end of the pills. I will have to admit it scares me a little bit. I guess I thought they would check you more often. Will pull up my big girl panties and move on. Not going to worry about it. I too was excited about getting a trial because there was no way I would ever be able to afford even the co pays if my insurance paid for it. Good luck and I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Thank you Tig56!  A journal is a good idea.  I think I can handle a little extra itchy/bitchiness for a chance to get well!  I will just remind myself how sick the people on interferon got, and count my blessings!  smile

I know how expensive these drugs are, and how bad my insurance is ($4,000 out of pocket per year before 100% coverage kicks in) so this is a Godsend.  They are even paying $75 per office visit, which will more than pay for my gas down there!

I am just stoked!!!  I was laying in bed wondering how much longer it would take to hear back on the blood work drawn Sept 25th, and at that exact moment they called! biggrin

I just found out I was accepted into this trial!   I have to go in this Friday so a doc can examine me again and make sure I don't have any pre-existing rashes before starting the meds.  I have been waiting for this for over 2 years now.  The meds have a good success rate and I am looking forward to getting this phase of my life over with!

I am waiting to see if I am accepted into this trial. We are waiting on the blood work results. My ultrasound came back ok. I think they said if I was accepted, I would probably take meds for 12. I have been trying to get into a trial for quite a while, so I am crossing my fingers!

Thanks Duane, good idea.  It sure feels good to get something accomplished for a change.  I want so bad to sail through this with as little drama as possible.  I want to get well for sure.  But there a couple of my friends that need treatment and are resisting it just like I did.  They are watching me closely to see how it goes  before they make a decision.  I keep telling them I will be on my snowboard as usual the end of December and the fact that I am stubborn with a positive attitude is going to get me there.  At 64 I may not have that many more board years in me so do not want to waste a season.  The fight is on and you just gave me another tool.

Maybe you can force the energy blast?I started a thing quite awhile back that no matter how small the task,  I was going to accomplish just 1 thing everyday that made a difference, some days it would be in the yard, others doing a chore my wife would normally do (those are the easiest shhh..lol ) which would have a positive impact and make me feel more worthwhile when it's  so easy to get down with all the health stuff going on.

It works and you start to see the little accomplishments pile up and it makes you want to continue the cycle, I've actually found myself scratching my head thinking of what i should do next.....sometimes one thing would turn into a whole day or afternoon and I'd  find myself enjoying the work!

Give it a try, start small, but something you can actually see that it made a difference....like cleaning up the clutter around the computer...if your like us it always gets messy, so when its cleaned up,  you see it often and with as much as you probably use yours as we do it serves as a reminder that ya gotta do your 1 thing yet today.

Duane

Just got my two week blood draw results. I have gone from 15,762,523 vl to undetected. I am really excited. Now if it will just keep working. Almost done with week three, just 9 more to go. Side effects so far have been manageable. I have a little shortness of breath on occasion, very short temper, headaches occasionally and a little achy towards the end of the day. Nothing I can't handle and really not even enough to complain about. I think a lot of that can be attributed to Ribavirin and also the fact that until now I took absolutely no medicine or supplements. Just had to adjust. There has been one side effect I have absolutely loved. About once a day or every other day I get a short burst of energy that is so cool. It may only last a half hour to an hour but I get more done then than I do all day. I haven't had much energy for a long time so it is really fun when it hits. Have a great day everyone, I sure am. Pam

The fact you are in a trial it puts you in a great position to inform a lot of us here on how the tx goes, sx, and other things...many people are waiting and wondering what will work or be prescribed for them as they await treatment, so your contribution to this forum is huge, and will help many others that follow behind you, thanks for joining us here and be generous with the information as you never know who besides yourself you will be helping.

Wishing you the best of outcomes on your tx and your improved life after you beat this thing.....I'm really glad to hear that your liver is in good shape as you get tx because that is what causes most of us the most problems is the damage done before we knew.

Go getem lilbit! We're all with ya!

After thoroughly going through this forum I realized I knew absolutely nothing about what I was doing on this study. All I knew was that I had Hep C and they thought I should treat it. I went to my appointment today, stomped my feet a little and got copies of all my lab results since I started going there. I really do not know what a lot of it means but know I have no fibrosis or cirrhosis and my liver is in good shape considering I am a recovering alcoholic and drank for a whole lot of years. I found out I was Geno 1a, I didn't even know that. My VL scared me because it is 15,762,523 which they showed me was consistent with January just a little higher. Had a blood draw today and hope we have killed some of those 15 million. Should know in a few days. I usually am pretty much in control of me and cannot believe I was just blindly following along. I also have pretty much hid the fact that I even had Hep C from family and friends. Decided enough of that. Put a little run down on my Facebook page about how, why, where, etc I might have picked it up and what I am doing now to deal with it. Normally I am the little sweetheart that everyone adores so now they will know when I take their head off I haven't gone off the deep end. I am devouring all the information on this forum and am so glad it is here.

Hi lilbit and welcome,

There is another forum member (hippiechick) doing Topaz II. She hasn't posted in awhile but began treatment in July and was responding very well last we heard. Do hope you'll keep in touch and let us know how things progress. Best of luck to you. wink

No problem lilbit, those things happen. We'll use this thread and remove the doubles. Welcome to the forum, I'm glad you're here! I wish you the best of luck with your treatment.
