Thanks for your remarks. If I want to put my fears to rest, seeing a hepatologist would be the best thing.

The reason I think the original test was correct, is that the clinic sent for a hep C specialist from San Francisco

to come and see me. She did another test to satisfy herself and told me in person that I indeed had the virus.

Also, the group of friends that I did the IV drugs with way back when, all have the virus. They also quit using

long ago. 2 have had treatment and cleared the virus, and another, who seems to be in good health, has yet

to do anything about his infection because his LFT's aren't very high and his doctor isn't suggesting treatment.

I know spontaneous remission without treatment is rare after such a long time. I'm hoping I got lucky. I once

went to the ER and the doctor told me he had an 83 y/o patient with Hep C that he was treating for something

else; the hep C was in check.

Hi Iconoclastic,

Very unusual story. If infected in the  '60's ', and with a VL of 3.6M in 1998, you've been remarkably lucky.

I'm surprised you were able to get an accurate VL in 1998. The only test was the Amplicor HCV monitor test with a LLOQ of 1000, and was really only used for research.

In any case, if you are now Undetected  with 2 PCR tests, you've got nothing to worry about.

Welcome you will find many here that have traveled your path to get here.

That said I think it's odd that you had it and then now appear not to have it, but that it is possible that your own immune system beat it.

I think I would get tested again and if there is anything less then "Undected" result I would seek tx.

It could be that the original test was not your results or something ???

But going to a Hepatologist  and getting the latest tests and his/her knowledge would give you peace of mind.

If it comes back undected.........be extremely happy and go enjoy life.

Hi everyone. I'm a 64 y/o guy who was an IV drug user in the "60's". In 1998 I was first diagnosed with chronic HCV

at a free clinic. I hadn't used a needle in 20 years. My genotype was 1a and my viral load was around 3,600,000.

After a long period of self improvement in which I went back to school at 50 and started working out with weights

and doing lot of cardio, I noticed that my AST and ALT were steadily going down. I had been putting off the interferon

ribavirin treatment because I didn't like the odds and was hoping for new treatments. I'm glad that new and better

treatments are now available. I got a new doctor in 2011 that gave me a PCR and it turned out negative. I've had 2,

more sensitive PCR's since then, both negative. I worry that despite the fact that the test can't find 50 copies, it doesn't

necessarily mean that I'm out of the woods. I am getting older and my immune system will get weaker. 

Maybe that was too much for an introduction :) I would love any input!
