Trainhopper,

How are you doing today?  You will never need another biop. because you will soon get treatment and this will be over.  I was diagnosed 14 years ago and I've had 3 biops; I will never have another one.

I don't even remember any real bruising to speak of, but they said I was bleeding more than normal. I think I would take a picture of it, and send it to that doctor or his staff. Did they tell you what to watch for before going to the ER? Just in case. It seems like you're mending but you're sure having a heck of a time with it.

That doesn't sound abnormal, but certainly not pleasant, any way you look at it! As long as you're improving, I would just continue to do what you're doing, and take it easy! You might get some relief by using a heating pad on low and take some Tylenol or Ibuprofen for discomfort. No wrestling or kick boxing!

if I touch the site..... Its quite painful the bruising is localized bout like u said but a lil bigger say a golf ball is one inch around its like 1.5-2 I feel better each day but the lung pain has spread to my diaphragm, and when I got it done, that's where i some severe pressure came from.... He said its normal.... But yeah feeling better. If they ask for another..... They can kiss my grits

I had some bruising, not much bigger than a golfball though and the scab was only the size of a pencil lead. What are you experiencing?

I talked to my doctor and she said Mohealth (a division on Medicaid) wont pay for it... but I'm good today it's like a 10 % increase each day

Trainhopper,

sorry your biopsy was so painful.  I got my first one in the 90's and felt like a slab of meat.  over the years I thought they improved the technique....my last one (2013) was painless as they put me in "twilight sleep".   If you have to have it again, I would suggest asking them to do this.

I have found over the years, I have to be my own healthcare advocate.  As the saying goes, 'knowledge is power'

 Got it.  I assumed you were preparing for tx, not on tx now, because most liver assessments are done before tx rather than during.   Sorry, I should have read your sig  line closer.

Glad you're feeling better Robin. Never forget my 1st biopsy, probably 15 years ago.  I have CRS but I remember everything about this......and it was not pleasant. cry    

Duane is missed, hope he's doing ok.

For about the same cost you can get a Firbroscan which is considerably more accurate for diagnosing cirrhosis than a Fibrosure blood-test.  It might be worth the drive if you decide you want one.  Here is a Fibroscan locator for the US:

I don't mean to alarm you but if your doc has never heard of Fibrosure testing you may want to discuss his experience with HCV treatment with him.  It is perfectly reasonable to inquire about your doc's experience treating a disease you have.  The doc you choose can make all the difference.

I'm sore but otherwise am fine.... it's starting to bruise but my breathing is not as shallow.... I took the bandage off ant the site is red and looks inflamed. but.... I'm going back to bed guys.... nighty night

This time the doc demanded another one and I said, k - u first. wink

I recall that thread, Angel, and many people including myself told you it hurt bad. biggrin  Huey even detailed his horrible experience.   The thing is that experiences are not the same for everyone.  Some people honestly report no pain and no problems because that was their experience.  Others have bad experiences.  

Fibroscan was approved in the US >a year ago but it takes time to implement new stuff.  More medical facilities are using them now and insurance companies are beginning to pay for fibroscans.

Fibroscans are great--but they can't do as much as a biopsy can.  Both have margins of error.  I have had both.  In Trainhoppers case a biopsy was a very good idea, IMHO, because he needed more than just an assessment of his liver fibrosis.  From what I understand the biopsy resulted in ruling out H.E. as a diagnosis once and for all, and I'm sure it revealed much more that, which will be very useful to Trainhopper and his docs in diagnosing his current problems and ultimately in treating his HCV.

They do have Fibroscans here Angel67. I think the biopsy is considered more accurate. When they did mine, I don't think they went in through the ribs. I was given a local, and although I felt it when the needle went in, it wasn't painful and it was quick. I remember being pretty nervous. Like a machine punched out a quick sample and got out of there. I had some slight soreness and was told to take it easy a few days. I guess the variances in pain level must have to do with how it's done etc...

 sucks they went through your ribs by the way i now know how that feels i had a plastic tube pushed through mine after i had a collapsed lung on monday ....

 

they went under my ribs on my biopsy.... 

 

 hopefully you wont have to have another 1 anytime soon

I'm sorry you have had such a hard time with your biopsy. Like Robertsamx, I was out for both of my biopsies with Versed (don't remember if I had any pain meds afterwards) and really did not have any after effects. And mine was done with ultrasound assistance and the sample was taken from below the ribs. Rest up and take it easy for a day or two. But at least it is over and done with!

Robin, In one of the other threads I made out that the liver biop was no big deal, sorry about that!!  They knocked me out for mine. After I woke up It really did not hurt.  Rather than going through my ribs, they  put the needle in 1 inch below the bottom of  my sternum.  Said they took like 5 biopsy"s  I did get a pain shot, they insisted, but it did not hurt.  After 1 hour in recovery , 4 hours in room they sent me home. Said to watch for shoulder pain as this would indicate bleeding of the liver and to go to  ER .  If I misled you i"m sorry.Glad your doing better, really sorry to hear about your liver pain and elavated  amm  levels, that really sucks.  Wishing the best for you and everyone on this forum   RC

It took me about 3 months for my body to forget the feeling, I think sometimes we have more of a Psyche of the event than the actual physical procedure. Especially if you were awake during the biopsy.

Give it a month and will be well.

nah....I have realized now....  I need the "no more tears" formula furious lol  it's just not normal for me to feel this kind of discomfort. I have had my head aches and stuff... And my belly hurts almost constantly, but this sharp" stabbin" crap, followed up closely by that A-hole "hard to breathe" it's trying.... it really is. But like I have said, this is just part of the journey that I have to venture on. And what would be a road without potholes? Bad example... lol cause it'd be pleasant and sweet with no potholes... nvr mind I'm rambling now

It shouldn't get worse Robin. If you experience a worsening in pain or difficulty in breathing, you need to have yourself checked. Did your doctor give you a contact number? You can go to the ER if necessary. Normally the pain should subside overnight. Discomfort at the injection site is expected, but increasing pain and shortness of breath, not so much. Just keep that in mind and maybe a box of Kleenex for any tears!!

I had my biopsy in 06 and I have never been in so much pain. Mine was also done with a local and between the ribs. I cried during the entire procedure. I felt better after they gave me about three shots of morphine, not at the same time of course. They use codeine here but I'm allergic to it. When I was released after about two hours I went home and stayed in bed all day. The next day I was fine. I to,d the doctor never again, if they want a biopsy they can knock me out and cut me open. For those who haven't done one but need to know that there are less painful options And I know people who barely felt it so do it if you need to. I would do a different procedure but I'd want to be out for it. Glad yours is done.

Mine hurt like the dickens too, Trainhopper, but it doesn't last forever.  I shouldn't elaborate (don't want to scare other members) but it felt like I was being stabbed....1....2....3.... times.  Not that I know what being stabbed feels like but what I would imagine.  

I was completely alert throughout the procedure.  I shouted "OUCH" and then a profanity: (Holy F***) mostly out of sheer surprise that I was being stabbed. lol   I'm not sure if the doc was surprised to hear those words; he appeared quite calm of course.  I also got this right shoulder pain that was unbelievable afterwards.  The good news is they sent me home with a few percocet and I was right as rain in a few days.  

Oh..the fun!

to be honest... I'm digging the pain... Reminds me of the dumb choice that put me here to begin with. Just another way for me to build a more solid foundation.  But yeah, I liked the Dr. he actually sat down with me for like 30 minutes to talk with me one on one.... Even laughed at my jokes... But as he did the ultra sound he walked me through it. I even cracked the "is it a boy or girl" joke. He laughed and said he thought it was a boy. I countered with "he said he loved me.... Now he won't call me back" Bad joke I know. But back on topic.... when he went over my liver he said he sees absolutely no signs of fatty tissue build-up. And said that if in fact I had hepatic ence. there'd be a massive build up. So with this biopsy in hand maybe I can get the skinny on why my elevated ammonia levels

Hey Robin,

Yeah, the percutaneous needle stick biopsy goes between the ribs. That's how they did mine too and one during surgery. They knocked me out for two of them, one was wide awake with a local. The pain didn't last too long, so I hope you're back on track pretty soon. Hang in there bro! It felt like you were stabbed (because you were)! Let me know where they are, I'll have a talk with em!!!!!

So, let me begin by saying that YES A BIOPSY HURTS!!!!  people said it will be fine, I believe I will. But, The pain involved with this is unreal. The Dr. went between my ribs? Not sure what's up with that but he did. So, I am having extreme Chest pains and when I cough I feel it in my Liver area. My liver area hurts anyway so this just makes me more mad. I understand that this needed to get done. I welcomed it. But yes it does hurt! No I wasn't admitted to the hospital I was released after (x) amount of hours. They did numb the area and when he did it..... I felt like I was stabbed.... BAD..... So when it was done.... after like 20 minutes with an elevated blood pressure of 197/100 and me crying like a pansy they decided to administer fentynol at 25 (whatever dosage) every 20 minutes...  So I feel bad but, it was worth it... I am in NO WAY trying to be negative thank you all for the support
