Had my first HepC doctor tell me that many people with HepC will have an increased risk for diabetes type 2. I also have rejected medication in favor of more exercise, watching my diet, and weight loss. I am treatment naive, so I do not have any input regarding previous treatment. This plan worked well until this last month, guess stress will add to insulin resistance, also. And stress eating candy corn mixed with popcorn is not very helpful, either! Congrats on your SVR Greg D.

I was prescribed Metformin, was taking it, and have stopped to see how things go from here. Weight normal. Been borderline diabetic for years but have had HCV for decades.

Yes, on all counts.  HCV has been linked to diabetes as has Interferon based tx.  My blood sugar levels were always normal pre-tx; elevated thereafter.  I haven't SVRd yet but am very hopeful that will help.

It has helped others but it can take time.  Hopefully, someone who has experienced this will chime in.

I took a pass on the Metformin, btw.  I have a normal body weight so doc said don't lose weight but do cut sugar/carbs and get plenty of exercise.  We will try to control glucose levels that way--and wait and see what SVR does.   Do you take Metformin?

Hello All,

Would I be correct in saying that people living with HCV are more susceptible to diabetes? Would it be fair to also say that treatment for HCV, particularly triple therapy (victrelis/ribavirin/peginterferon), elevates blood sugars? Finally, as I am SVR+24, in theory would it then follow that I will see my blood sugars drop back into the normal range eventually? confuse

Thanks in advance for your input!
