This link was provided here on the forum and we discussed this topic in the recent past. This 2013 article from the Journal of Infectious Disease gives you something else to consider. The subject is still being researched. Always be cautious of any blood spills, and personal grooming items. The best disinfectant is a 1:10 bleach solution.

  • Recent studies suggest that HCV may survive on environmental surfaces at room temperature at least 16 hours, but no longer than 4 days. There is no risk of transmission from sharing a hot tub with an infected person. Transmission of hepatitis C virus occurs through blood-to-blood contact.

Hi Michaele,

Relax. Personally,  I wonder about the Mayo study. Sure, the virus may survive for a long period under certain circumstances. The example given about surviving in a glass syringe seems odd to me.

Just be sensible. If you have blood on your dentures, clean it off and use some bleach.

After SVR, reinfection from your own personal items seems unlikely IMHO. Smile!

Hi Michaele,

There have been various studies done on this which is why you`ve found conflicting information, but honestly I think by now you`re perfectly safe to start wearing your denture again without any fear of reinfecting yourself.

And actually just the bleaching and cleaning on its own would be enough to be safe, and you`ve left it out for over 16 weeks as well.

You`ll be fine to use it again now, try not to be scared. 

Get your smile back...you`ll be able to eat a lot more easily too!  smile

Hi All    Im confused . I called the CDC and asked a human , "How long can Hep C live oustside the body?  " . I was told  , " not less than 16 hr and up to 4 days " . However , a study done at Yale states,  " it can live up to 16 weeks at room temp. "   Im sitting here trying to decide if its safe to put my bottom bridge work in my mouth. I soaked it in the 10% bleach, then vinegar , then poured peroxide on it , and somewhere in between soaked it in denture cleaner . Its has been dry and at room temp wrapped in tissue  for 16 & 1/2 weeks.  Im so afraid of reinfecting myself that Im afraid to put it in my mouth , but to replace it would cost a small fortune . Any ideas. Feeling like Chicken Little           Michaele
