Cinnamon Girl:  On Peg/Riba, I lost 45 pounds and boy, was I glad of that (at least that was a benefit of that torture). Over the years I gained half back and recently lost that. But now I'm struggling to maintain that.

Bills: If I gain 20 pounds I will be very distraught!

Tig: That little rash has appeared sporadically on my right hand between my 2nd and 3rd fingers by the knuckle.  It comes and goes.  And I will take your advice and slather on the sunscreen, wear a hat and sunglasses. However, no worries about that this week as the temp is dropping and there's a possibility of SNOW (NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!) on Thursday.

Seems  I'm not the only one gaining weight, I was about to ask the same question. I gained about least 20 pounds, on Harvoni  it was a slow steady increase.

I may be getting Fatter

But at least I'm no longer a big fat HEPPER

Hi Fem, when I was on my treatment with Peg/riba I lost my appetite for most things but strangely enough I craved for red meat too, and I`m normally a vegetarian!!  So I just ate it, I figured it was what my body wanted, especially as there was so little I could fancy.

I`m sure al lot of your side effects are caused by the riba, as Tig mentioned.  Light exercise and fresh air is very good for you but just go a bit easy on yourself while you`re on tx, and be careful about exposure to the sun.  This won`t last forever, listen to what your body is telling you!

Best of luck!

Fem,

I believe your fatigue has much to do with the Ribavirin. I'm absolutely certain that the Riba is responsible for the sun sensitivity. Be very cautious while in the sun. Besides increasing your risk of sunburn, it can cause what we call the Riba rash. If you notice red itchy patches forming anywhere, mine were on my abdomen primarily, don't scratch it! We can give you some tips to combat it if it appears. Always, always use sunscreen, a hat and UV sunglasses when outside.

One idea during these times of increased cravings and food desires is to try and eat the good stuff, but if you can't help it and have to have something, go ahead and eat, but sparingly if possible. Watch the caloric values but don't cheat the craving. Sometimes a small portion or a couple bites will quell the desire! Always drink a full glass of water, flavor it with something like Mio or the store brand, it's good. I lived on the sweet tea flavor when I was on treatment. Still do.

Now I have a craving for some General Tso's Chicken...

It has been 6 days since I ended 24 weeks of Harvoni.  I too ate like a champ and gained 20 lbs during treatment.  My hunger appears to be subsiding now so I feel I will be returning to normal eating habits.  I also seem to have more energy and will be incorporating some walking.

I'm hungry all the time and I'm on the max dose of Ribavirin as well. Even when I have my Riba moments, I'm still hungry. So I try to eat a lot of salads with healthy dressings and other high fiber foods to fill me up. I just ate dinner and I'm hungry. And this post is making me hungrier! Can't say how long it will last. After the Viekira is gone I suspect. Gotta go. Time to eat!

I could be the poster child for weight gain on HCV treatment. I gained around 20 lbs with Sovaldi and Olysio.
I have problems with nausea and for some reason my brain thinks food will make it better. I've only lost about 5 lbs but if I was still eating like I was on treatment I would still be gaining. Plus, all I did was sit around for the duration of treatment and for about 10 weeks after. I'm 16 weeks after the end of treatment now and it's only in the last 4 weeks that I've started feeling alright again. But this is just me. Most people on S/O didn't have the nausea problem so bad.
I think it will go away for you.

I gained weight and was hungry often on Viekira pak. All total I gained about 5 lbs. Am now trying to take it off and then some. I think my eating was nerves more than anything. Unfortunately food is my comfort whenever I go through stress of any kind. I wonder what my excuse will be when I hit SRV24. hehehehe

Hi all,

I was curious if anyone else is experiencing weight gain on some of the newer treatments (e.g., Harvoni, Viekira Pak). I've been more hungry than usual, and eating like a champ (without the exercise component). Is that just me? I know people weighed in on cravings in the "Controlling Cravings" thread, but I don't really have a particular craving, just hungry and eating quite a bit more than usual.

For those who finished treatment, can you weigh in if this is  something that goes away, and how soon?
