I think the Harvoni can have an effect on estrogen levels and if so, that could be why the crying is happening. Or, perhaps the elimination of the virus causes our hormones to fluctuate. I don't have any citations to support this but am basing my thoughts on the number of posts I have read from women who have experiences such as yours and my own. Just a thought, but one I found comforting.

Meanwhile, I agree with Matt's advice to you.

Hi Ranelle,

I'm sorry you're having these emotional issues and hope they subside as you move forward. We had enough of that with Interferon and Riba to last a lifetime. As I look across the various posts here and articles online, it seems you aren't alone in dealing with this. Even though Gilead claims it to affect less than 2% of all Harvoni patients, it seems to be a fairly common complaint. Those on Riba mention increased issues with not just anger, but sadness and crying. It's such a new protocol, I think these issues are being mentioned more often as the pool of treated patients increases. Overall I think the incidence is still low, so let's hope that after the first couple of weeks these problems will diminish. 

I know you're a strong personal advocate, but let me ask you to be sure to let your doctor know about this. Perhaps changing your schedule will help. I know this is a different tx, but I would consider an AD if needed.  Do your best to maintain the course and know that we're always here to talk.

I love all the support. I too feel a shift in emotion. I crave singing. Since I was a child I would sing for every reason. Of course I grew up and didn't sing as much, but since I started Harvoni I want to just sing! My day today is much better. It's my fourth day on the Tx. I had an anxiety attack yesterday. Today, I feel excellent but sleepy. I feel good. I have no uncomfortable side effects. I had joint aches yesterday but today is not really there. I'm only mildly tired. Hang in there. I'm on this ride with you.

I don't think that the crying is a "side-effect" of the Harvoni. However it could be a "result" of the Harvoni & your actually having it and taking it. You may have a lot of pent up emotions from living with Hep C for so many years. Fears, anger, etc that you have pushed down because there was nothing much you could do but wait for a treatment to come along that you could take & actually be cured. Now that you have it maybe those emotions are being released from you because you no longer need to carry the burden of them.  Let them go; cry as much as you need to then get up and do a "happy dance".

Just a thought but maybe take a few days off, away from the day to day and do something for yourself. Something you enjoy doing.... spoil yourself!  wink

Hey Ranelle

I can relate to your problem but I also was on Riba, seems at the littlest emotional issue I could tear up. I thought it was the Riba but even after being off it for 2 weeks the emotional quickness seems to have legs.

Best advice I could give is to find a quiet place to meditate and or take a nice long walk on a path near nature and breath in the fresh air and sunshine. Try not to hold it back, get it out and use it to visualize the tears representing the HCV being vanquished or leaving your body for ever.

Your on Harvoni with no ribaviran,  your probably crying tears of joy!!! Not trying to be a wise a$$ but I bet if you search your feelings you'll find that your happy/greatfull and feel better.

I have been an Harvoni now for 2 weeks and this morning I woke up very emotionalcan't stop crying! Song, commercial or even just talking to someone triggers it. I usually am NOT a crier, so this is VERY unusual for me. Please tell me that this is a normal side effect of treatment and that it passes!no
