Hi Shiraz, welcome to the forum.

I`m sorry to hear your father has had his treatment stopped, this must be a big worry for you.

Riboflavin is just vitamin B2 which is obtained from a wide range of foods.  Has your father had his B vitamin levels tested?

From what you`ve told us I would definitely seek a second opinion from a different hepatologist who is experienced with treating people with Hep C.

I wish you and your father all the best of luck.  smile

Hi Shiraz,

Tig is referring to creatine, an enzyme produced in the brain, and cardiac and skeletal muscle. In the Clinical Trials, creatine kinase elevation was found in ~2% of patients.

On the other hand, creatinine is a waste product from muscle metabolism. It is removed by the kidneys into the urine, and usually is fairly stable with a normal range of 0.7-1.3 mg/dL.

If your fathers kidneys are normal, there is no cause for alarm. His Nephrologist is the person to answer that. The increased creatinine may just represent some temporary elevation of creatine kinase, which is broken down to creatinine.

The Sovaldi prescribing information states: 'No dose adjustment of SOVALDI is required for patients with mild or moderate renal impairment'.

It seems a shame that treatment was stopped, as he will have to start his 24 weeks of Sovaldi/ Ribavirin again.

I would get an opinion from another Hepatologist. Best of luck.

P.S. What the hell is a 'liver inflammation syrup'??

My impression is the liver specialist, having treated patients with Hep C before, may have seen additional patients that experienced a critical creatinine elevation and in his opinion feels it's safer to discontinue treatment than risk damaging his kidneys. The nephrologist may not be as knowledgeable in the area of HCV treatment. I would trust the liver doc in areas pertaining to HCV. You can always contact a second liver specialist for an opinion, which may be wise anyway.

Does that elevation require you to be put off the meds cauz the doctor stopped any kind of treatment for a month and prescribed a liver inflamation syrup. That is the reason i am not trusting my doc and willing to change, maybe get a better opinion because of the green flag from the nephrologist. Sovaldi was the only option and he told me that he is never ever gonna start it. There is no option left except for the transplant that is in the far future. And i have not seen anyone recovering without treatment.

Hi Shiraz,

I'm sorry to hear your Father isn't doing well. The Sovaldi literature states that in up to 2% of patients, the creatinine levels were found to elevate as much as 10 times the upper level of normal. So yes, it's possible. I unable to comment one way or another on what you should do. There may be a number of factors involved that we are unaware of. At any rate, the fact that he has been off treatment for a month will require starting the treatment process over. My opinion of course. I would trust his doctor to know best at this point. I wish your Father well, good luck.

Hello guys,
New to the forum. I just need to ask that my father was on sovaldi treatment for 4 days when his (serum) creatinine level shot up to 2.53 which later came down to 1.96 and now at 1.43. He has no renal impairment and his kidney ultrasound and detailed urine report is perfectly normal. He is cirrhotic (Hep-c) at stage 2 according to doc (hep-c) which stopped the sovaldi + ribavirin treatment to save his kidneys. However during the period he was also on diuretics (furosemide) occasionally. His nephrologist says that it is safe to continue sovaldi treatment but the other doc gave a red flag (I have yet to have a dicussion with the nephrologist). So I am asking that is it possible that creatinine levels change because of sovldi or do i need to the change my doc? Also he has edema occasionally. He also has acid reflux.

Genotype: 3

Stopped treatment for a month.

Regards
